Sebastian Cox Ltd Designers, makers and environmentalists. Fine furniture with a nature-first perspective. Proving that a traditional approach can be radical.

The Sebastian Cox workshop and studio were founded in 2010 on the principle that a traditional approach could be radical and that the past can be used to design and make the future. Without nostalgia or sentimentality but with respectful inventiveness and new technology. We mill trees, design and make furniture.

Hand-cleft, hand-scorched. Meet our new Cleft cabinet, rich in texture and quiet drama.

A tableau of chestnut shakes, harvested from our own woodland, cleft and individually scorched, cover the doors. These are framed within a handsome dovetailed solid ash carcass.

Available with shelves or hanging rails and made to order. This piece is equally ready to order or indeed customise.

I really enjoy the process of making precise cuts with a hefty chainsaw. Craft tools are often considered quiet and gentile. This tool is not, but the hand skills required to use them are the same. The level of risk and skill required amplify each other making it a thrilling process.

A couple of slices to get my eye in, then just 4 cuts to slice this log into near perfect little quarters. By doing it right first time, the finish remains crisp and authentic.

Instead of filler or resin…

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love a paper OS map. Using those simple principles we’ve developed a method of taking our CNC machine to coordinate and inlay multiple bespoke fillets of wood over cracks in this table top.

When faced with ‘imperfect’ timber with cracks our client may not want, we can inlay, or we can fill.

Filling is a blunt and ugly tool. I detest the trend for pouring resin into wood, it permanently makes our most noble natural material into a composite that cannot return to the earth.

Inlaying is often constrained to geometric shapes, for the ease of copying the negative to positive form for a tight fit.

This technique allows us to follow the shapes of the natural cracks, with precise inlays tailored to each imperfection.

We make a map, find out where we are, and set some coordinates to be cut. Simple and beautiful.

I must add, it takes only the very best and most open clients to feel free enough to try this kind of work with their precious material. Thank you L & C as always for the trust and adventurous spirit. I can’t wait to see it all cut in place!

The hazel we coppiced in winter ‘25 is dry and ready for working. We’re making a new batch of Crown candelabras and invite you to reserve yours now for autumn delivery which can be done via the link in our bio.

The Crown Candelabra is our vision of a modern, materially rich, candelabra. It is made from rods of hazel, coppiced from our own woodland, jointed into a sculpted base of English ash. Each stem is turned on a lathe giving each a unique shape and covering of bark.

A bedroom is more than just a place to sleep – it is a deeply personal idyll where we can rest and retreat, enjoy the rituals of self care, peace and pleasure. A bedroom filled with thoughtfully made pieces purely for our own enjoyment is a luxurious notion.

We have designed and made every piece in our growing bedroom collection with our sights firmly set on this intention. Comfort, rest and ease. Every bed, side table, chest of drawers, armoire and mirror is made to order, using solid English-grown wood, in our own workshop with great skill and exceptional attention to detail.

View the collection via the link in our bio. We invite you to slow down and unwind in a space that feels truly personal and your own idea of calm.

A new Sebastian Cox treehouse has emerged in the Hertfordshire hills.

People have been building treehouses for centuries; from ancient civilisations choosing to build homes high up with good visibility and protection, to the imaginative treetop hideaways we know today. They inspire a great sense of adventure, a deep connection with nature and a view of the land from a different perspective.

I’m delighted to share one of our latest treehouses with you, designed and made for a Grand Atlas Tree in Hertfordshire. A structure conceived where cabinetry meets medieval timber framed buildings. It is an English-grown ash frame with pegged mortice and tenons clad with scorched larch and cleft chestnut. The windows are glazed and the railings are coppiced wood. The walkways are fitted around the undulations of the trunks and its branches become part of the architecture.

No two Sebastian Cox treehouses are the same. Each one is thoughtfully designed in conversation with the unique character and form of its host tree.

If you’re interested in finding out more or commissioning your own treehouse, please visit the link in our bio and send us a message.
