Chelsea Textiles is a family firm, started by Mona Perlhagen, who moved to London from New York, where she had been a fashion buyer for Bloomingdale’s. She identified a need for perfect recreations of antique embroidered fabrics and cushions, to complement traditional interiors, and set about researching and sourcing authentic materials and the world’s best craftsmen, to produce hand-embroidered fabrics of the same quality as those of the 17th and 18th centuries.

A glimpse into the making of Tree of Babylon, a hand-embroidered Tree of Life design inspired by an early 18th-century English curtain panel.

Its intricate flowers, foliage and fruit are recreated using 37 different colours of cotton and wool thread. A seven-metre length takes six skilled artisans approximately two weeks to embroider.

Across a rolling, multicoloured hillscape, a Tree of Life unfolds amongst flowers, twisting vines and a menagerie of animals — from a scavenging monkey and bushy-tailed squirrels to a serpent, owl and swooping bat.
