This time in Take Five, the barstool. The hardest-working chair in most homes we design, and very often the least considered.

Five we keep going back to:

01 Circle Bar Stool –
02 Alexander Street Stool – Philippe Malouin for Man Of Parts
03 Tractor Stool – BassamFellows
04 Limantour Stool – L U T E C A
05 Gentle Barstool – Sebastian Herkner for LINTELOO

Choose it early, sit on it before you buy it, and buy fewer, better ones. All five are in our London showrooms.

A home office has become a room in its own right, so the desk should be built like furniture rather than equipment.

The new Vipp432 Work Desk takes the clean lines of Vipp’s Studio desk and makes it larger, at 160 × 80 cm, with room to spread out. Its worktop is aniline leather framed in solid wood, in two pairings: light oak with Camel leather, or walnut with Bosco leather.

Vipp’s industrial precision, with the warmth of leather where your hands rest.

The desk is so often the last thing chosen and the first thing compromised. Now that it lives in the home, it has to look as considered with the laptop closed as with it open.

In the latest Take Five, Staffan Tollgård chooses five iconic desks that do:

604 by Mario Gottardi for Ceccotti Collezioni
Office Desk by Bodil Kjær for Karakter
CH110 by Hans J. Wegner for CARL HANSEN & SØN
Ventaglio by Charlotte Perriand for Cassina
Out of Line Homedesk by BIEKE CASTELEYN

Crystal, stone and solid wood, under one roof.

Three of the makers we work with most closely are at Decorex, Olympia London, from 11 to 14 October:

Bomma, Stand G50 (BOMMA): light blown by hand in Czech crystal, plus a new collection launching at the show.

Alabastro Italiano, Stand D71 (Alabastro Italiano by Ongarato Bespoke Lighting): Italian alabaster, lit from within.

RIVA1920, featured in the VIP Lounge (Riva1920 | Riva Industria Mobili S.p.A): solid wood from Cantù, “From Nature to Home”.

New from Studio Aristotelis Barakos: Pétale.

Satin-brushed brass, curved like a petal and hung singly or gathered into clusters of three or five.

Each piece carries its own light, and together they turn a ceiling into something closer to a mobile.

Some pieces can change the feeling of an entire room.

David Rockwell’s Constellation collection for LASVIT brings the quiet pull of the night sky indoors, as a cluster of light that works as well at noon as it does at midnight.

Come and see it in person at our showroom in Design Centre Chelsea Harbour and discover the full Lasvit collection on the Tollgard website.

Furniture is made to be lived with, and our favourite way to see it is with people in the room.

An evening at our Chelsea showroom: a conversation on the sofa beneath the glow of the Constellation by LASVIT with Jeroen De Ruddere warming the room, and hands drawn to the marble and walnut of Suiseki by Riva1920 | Riva Industria Mobili S.p.A, designed by Staffan Tollgård and Filippo Castellani. Hosted by the wonderful Pip Rich.

Furniture is made to be lived with, and it’s never more alive than with a glass in hand and good company around it. Thank you to everyone who came.

Come and sit with the pieces yourself and visit our Tollgard showroom.

There’s a moment each evening when the overhead light is too much and a candle too little.

The FL4 collection by Jeroen lives in that space, a slender turned stem and a tall shade that glows rather than glares, casting the kind of light you want to sit beside.

Quiet by design. The best kind of company.
