Who actually makes the purchasing decisions in UK schools—and why is it so difficult to reach them?
If you supply products or services into education, you’ll know that identifying the true decision maker can feel like navigating a maze. But does it depend on the type of school?
In primary schools, is it the Headteacher who signs things off, or does the School Business Manager or even the Office Manager handle purchasing decisions day-to-day?
In secondary schools, things seem even more complex. Do Site Managers or Facilities Managers drive requirements for things like furniture, while SBMs or Bursars control the budget—and the Headteacher gives final approval?
What about independent schools? Is the Bursar always the key contact, given their commercial focus, or are there other influencers involved?
And when it comes to academy trusts, is procurement now centralised? Should suppliers be targeting Trust Finance Directors and Procurement Leads, or is it still worth engaging with individual schools within the trust?
🔹Who is the real decision maker?
🔹Who influences the decision the most?
🔹And who is actually the easiest to engage with?
It would be great to hear how others are navigating this—whether you’re a supplier, school leader, or part of a trust.
Are we all overcomplicating this, or is it genuinely this fragmented?
