DIY with Anja Women's DIY Tutor, Handywoman, Interior Designer and Soap Maker based in Manchester. I consider myself an expressionist craftswoman with a fine art sensibility.

Hi, I'm Anja,

I’m a freelance wood and interior designer based in Manchester. My working interests are broad and ever-evolving, including woodwork, furniture design and improvisation from reclaimed materials as well as designing and re-imagining interior spaces. I spent the first part of my professional life favouring the analytical side of my brain and personality. With a degree in Sociology, Media Studies and English from Germany, I reported on British and American culture and society as a freelance journalist for German news outlets such as Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Der Tagesspiegel, Die Welt und ZEIT Online. I published numerous peer-reviewed academic articles and book chapters in the field of popular music and fandom studies, and helped other scholars disseminate their work in the English-speaking scientific world in good English. In 2016, triggered in part by the death of my lifelong inspiration David Bowie, I began working creatively with tangible materials like wood, paints, stains and pieces of seemingly unsalvageable furniture. I have since designed my first series of coat racks which combine expressionist and abstract painting with a useful, but often bland piece of homeware. But don’t you let that put you off! To continuously add to my “vocabulary”, skill set and repertoire, I am attending courses at the Leeds College of Art and Design, Manchester DIY School, and soon the National Design Academy. When I’m not working in wood or breathing new life into sad and unimaginative spaces, I like to take long countryside walks with my dog Dixon, immerse myself in the Manchester jazz, art and theatre scene or travel to explore what other cities and cultures have to offer.

Ever tried applying silicone in those really awkward spaces behind a toilet, basin or taps?

Sometimes your silicone gun just won't fit, no matter how hard you try!

That's where these clever little adjustable silicone nozzles come in.

Simply swap your standard nozzle for one of these and suddenly those tricky corners become so much easier to reach.

Such a simple little tool, but a real game changer for bathroom DIY!

You can find the product via the link in the comments. Or just come to one of my upcoming siliconing classes in November. Only 3 tickets left now.

I'm a big fan of wooden toilet seats. They're just so much nicer than white plastic and just bring a bit of warmth and a natural material into the space. When doing this recent bathroom reno my brief to myself was to keep as much of the original bathroom as possible while updating and modernizing the context. Changing the toilet seat was one of these updates. And I'm glad I invested the extra £37... What do you think?

My Basic Drill Skills classes this November are now fully booked. For anyone still keen to learn how to use a drill to fix pictures, mirrors, curtain rods or shelves securely into brick or plasterboard walls, I have added ONE EXTRA date on Sunday, 8th Nov. This will be your last chance to attend one of these classes until Feb 2027, so grab your ticket while you can. It costs 55 GBP plus booking fee, which is less than a callout fee for a handyperson.
