🍄 ALZHEIMER’S & PSILOCYBIN 🍄
An 80-year-old woman with advanced Alzheimer’s disease became the subject of a remarkable case report published in Frontiers in Neuroscience.
She’s been living with Alzheimer’s for around 10 years and for the previous 5 years, was largely non-verbal, incontinent and dependent on full-time care.
Under supervised conditions, she was given a 5g dose of psilocybin mushrooms.
The initial response was intense but approximately 19 hours later she reportedly woke and began speaking again in full sentences.
According to the report, she was able to engage in conversation, recall personal memories, recognise family members, maintain eye contact and show emotional responsiveness that had largely disappeared.
She regained continence, improved her mobility and was able to dress herself independently.
A second, 3g dose administered one month later reportedly resulted in even greater verbal expression, physical agility and spontaneous humour.
Now before everyone gets too excited, I have to say this bit…
⚠️ This is a single case report.
⚠️ It does NOT prove psilocybin reverses Alzheimer’s.
⚠️ It does NOT mean everyone with dementia would experience similar results.
The study was conducted under carefully monitored conditions and much more research is needed before anyone can draw firm conclusions.
That said...
I find this absolutely fascinating.
If I ever face Alzheimer’s, would I personally be exploring something that had the potential to improve communication, memory, connection and quality of life?
Absolutely.
The most exciting thing about this paper is that it raises more questions.
Questions about neuroplasticity, about the brain’s ability to adapt and change and about whether we’ve underestimated what these compounds may actually be capable of.
My grandfather died with severe Alzheimer’s and if someone had told me there was even a possibility of him remembering his loved ones, speaking more freely, connecting more deeply and regaining some independence...
I’d have wanted to know more.

If you or someone you loved had Alzheimer’s, would this be something you’d want to explore?
Why or why not? 🍄
