BIG NEWS FOR CAMPERVAN OWNERS!

DVLA has updated its motor caravan registration guidance, and some of the old requirements have finally gone!

As of 19 October 2026, the updated guidance brings some welcome changes for anyone converting a van into a campervan or motorhome.

WHAT'S NO LONGER REQUIRED?

- Motorhome-style graphics on both sides of your van.
- An awning rail or bar fitted to the exterior.
- A fixed high-top roof. Pop-top elevating roofs are now included in the guidance.
- The previous restrictive list of eligible V5C body types has been removed.

WHAT DO YOU STILL NEED?

Your conversion must still have the required living accommodation, including seating, a table, sleeping facilities, cooking facilities and storage.

DVLA also expects suitable windows, a separate entrance to the living area and a high-top or pop-top roof when considering a change to the registered body type.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW

You don't necessarily need your V5C to say "Motor Caravan" to legally use your converted van as a campervan, provided it meets the relevant requirements.

This is particularly good news for professionally converted VW Transporters, Ford Transit Customs and similar campervans fitted with pop-top roofs.

Three summers on and still looking fantastic! 😍🚐

It’s great to welcome back this awesome bespoke VW T6 camper, which we converted three summers ago.

It’s still one of our favourite builds, thanks to the choice of materials, attention to detail , solid bamboo blue tooth speaker we made and clever slide-out rear bench and table combination. Seeing how much the owner still loves it—and how beautifully they’ve cared for it—makes it even more special.

This visit included a solar upgrade, water and Diesel heater service, habitation service and a general check-over. We also took care of a few small snags and refinements to the bespoke design, free of charge, even though the warranty period had ended.

Proud of the build, and always pleased to see it back for a little care and attention! 🔧☀️
