Whitley Growallot Community Garden based in South Reading welcoming anyone interested in getting involved. We will provide raised beds adapted for those with mobility issues.

Food4Families secured the lease from Reading Borough Council to transform a piece of abandoned land in the centre of Whitley into a community allotment managed by local residents growing their own fruit and vegetables in 2013. People new to growing are supported in learning to plan, sow, grow and harvest using natural growing principles. More experienced growers can have their own raised bed if they would like.Produce grown is shared out amongst participants and used in cookery lessons. All waste will be collected and fed back into the project via a community composting scheme.

Keep dowing so you have no hungry gap in spring.

We're well past the autumn equinox now and the days are getting noticeably shorter.

If you've got a tunnel or greenhouse, you can still sow winter salads, though they will grow more slowly now that there's less daylight. I tend to sow broad beans & peas in spring, but the hardy field beans do really well sown now. And I'll definitely be getting sweet peas sown this month.

This time of year is really about gathering in the harvest though. Make the most of the last of the summer crops like tomatoes & peppers, and welcome the squashes, greens and roots that make warm, comforting dishes for autumn days.

I'll be lifting and storing carrots & beetroot this coming week. You can leave them in the ground, depending on where you are in the UK, but bringing them in is safer if you are likely to get very cold weather or have mice / voles around.

How many unused plots are there on your allotment site?

With allotment waiting lists remaining long in many areas, we're interested to hear what you're seeing on your own site.

Are most of your plots actively cultivated, or are there plots that appear to have been unused for some time?

In autumn yellow-legged Asian hornet nests can produce around 350 queens each. The queens that survive winter establish new colonies the next year. If not spotted, reported and destroyed, this species can spread quickly.
