I create unique and interesting contemporary, handcrafted pieces furniture and carpentry. Please con We design and build them by hand in Hertfordshire.

At Tower Creations we design and manufacture handcrafted modular planters made from select Western Red Cedar. I found inspiration from working at a tropical botanical garden in Miami, where I met lots of interesting and lovely plants as well as people. My planters are designed so they are functional as well as being attractive. Growing plants destined for my stomach or simply growing plants for my

A new wine rack is born!

I had a very challenging morning with this big piece of timber. I wanted to make two tall chunky wine racks from it. So I needed to cut it down to size. I now have two, one metre high, twins. cut from a single 2.1m, 20cm wide piece of timber. I then went onto my computer with the measurements and plotted where I wanted the holes to go. It really helps doing this. I can get a rough idea of the hole spacings and therefore the look that this piece will take.-
-
Sanding smooth and then introducing five new deep holes into the surface. This is, by far, where most of my time gets taken up. The holes have to be approximately 90 millimetres in diameter and 180 millimetres deep (this is quite a chunk of material to excavate).
-
-
After the process of making the holes, I would usually tidy the piece up and then put a clear sealer coat on, to protect the surface from dirt and staining. This one though, I have decided to paint. I tried painting it myself but I am not able to get the finish I would like (professional). So, I am dropping this one off today to (where interesting and exciting things are made). I am then delivering it to in St Albans. Where you can enjoy the best cheese and wine pairing (and the best wine racks).

"So, which way do you want me?"
-
"Any which way. I just want you!"

Multi furniture. Wine rack stool, side table.

My first use of using a chainsaw to carve with was an awesome success!
-
I started this piece off by carefully shaping the blank block of oak with my chainsaw. This created the lovely angles to the piece.
The chainsaw leaves behind a rough surface. So I take some time to smooth it down, by hand (not with my hand, that would be sore but finally using some 320grit).
-
I then start to work on the holes. There is no easy way to make them, so a little bit of brawn and some perseverance pays off.
-
I apply three coats of water based sealer to the surface. This helps to produce a slimy smooth finish. The front and back I chose to use a dead flat finish, the sides and top a gloss finish. I like both the contrast of the shiny and mat with the dark stain and the natural wood showing through some lovely detail of the grain.

My first chainsaw carving. Not used one before and I am really happy with the results. I will clean it up a little by sanding it. -

I'm trying to decide how many wine holes to put in this one and where.

I am starting the process of transforming this, blank, unassuming, piece of green oak into a new six hole wine rack. The carving process takes me three quarters of a day to complete. I will then be sanding the piece smooth, ending with a 360 grit paper. I will then apply three coats of dead flat sealer making the surface irresistible to touch.-
-
-
I carve all my pieces myself from single blocks of green oak.

Green oak is newly felled. Newly felled timber has lots of moisture in it still. As the moisture releases into the atmosphere the wood dries, any features like cracks will tend to open out slightly and other detail such as knots will depress slightly. Making them become even more interesting and beautiful pieces of furniture.
-
-
When carving the oak gives off an amazing aroma. The waste chippings I create, when carving out the holes, end up on my BBQ where the smoulder and produce lots of smoke to help flavor my food :)
-
-
The measurements for this piece are approximately
810mm high -
125 wide -
250mm deep -
-
I make these to order. Everyone is individual and unique. -
