Feeling ALL the feels this week.

The question we get asked the most about this little business is…

“Did you ever imagine it would be all this?”

The truth is, I never really imagined anything.

I just worked, kept on working, and made it work along the way.

And somehow, all of this happened, and is still happening 10 years later.

If you know me or Craig at all, you’ll know we aren’t really ones to stop and look back at “what we’ve done, or built” or whatever.

We like to graft (we thrive off it actually.)

BUT something about a decade really has made me think about what we’ve done here- and I’m a bloody emotional wreck 🤣🤣 (maybe that’s why I don’t usually take stock 😂)

As Walt Disney said…

“You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality.”

So to all our incredible team, and most wonderful customers, THANK YOU for making this place real. We are blessed to have you.

And of course to my amazing Craig, without him, there’d be no mirrors on the walls.

I have this thing with Charlie.

Let me tell you our story, but you won’t believe it (cos sometimes even I don’t )…

Charlie approached us wayyyyyy back in the early days, before we had a team member solely for online. She reached out and we fell in love 😂 I managed to convince Craig that it was the only way we could ever grow (he was rightly nervous about the risk of taking on a team member.)

Then Charlie had a moment, she realised the career change wasn’t right for her at the time.

We were devastated, but it had awakened us! We realised we did have room for an online team member.

So we started looking!

It was the first time we’d ever hosted interviews and it honestly blew me away with how many talented, creative people were literally on our doorstep!

Anyway, we hired, found someone amazing, and it was wonderful. But then after not quite 12 months she opted for a career change and left us.

Honestly I felt like a teenager who had been dumped 😭😭(Craig will tell you 😂).

I was so sad, panicked and felt really unsure about how we would manage it all. We’d not long had our second baby and things were starting to feel a little easier; all I could think was how would we manage shop floor and online since it had started to grow alongside 2 babies under 3 at home?!

So I started frantically looking again, I couldn’t bring myself to go through the whole interview process again but I reached out to a few of the initial applicants, but without any luck.

Then laid in bed (probably crying) one night, I remembered Charlie. I knew it was a whim, but we had nothing to loose. I wrote an email just asking if maybe her circumstances had changed and if she might like to meet up…

AND GUESS WHAT…

(She tells me) She had a message already typed to send us, asking if there were anything she could help us with, as HER CIRCUMSTANCES HAD CHANGED!!!

Charlie had also not long had a baby and was on maternity, she joined us the month she returned back to work!

Can you bloody believe it?! So the rest is history guys, I think I believe in fate, or as Craig’s 20 year old tattoo says, that “life is written”.

If I see one more “Amazon gift guide” I might just quit.

JOKING.

I’ll never quit.

Cos I am bursting with passion and love for real retail, shopping experiences, people, conversations, cool stuff, things that people haven’t seen everywhere, things that people have designed…

Amazon has its place, OF COURSE IT DOES.

But before you get sucked in by an Amazon Christmas gift guide, please give “gift guide” a search on instagram and find some independent makers and retailers working REALLY HARD to get their name, and their cool stuff out there.

I promise you’ll find some really cool stuff, probably not endorsed by influencers, or BNOC’s.

Things that might surprise you about a person who owns an interior store…

We don’t own cool mugs, and we don’t have many! If you’re visiting and you’re a tea drinker, you’re screwed!

I’m the least house proud person you’ll ever meet. I love my home, but I’m not precious about anything. I love it to feel used and lived in more than anything else (Craig may disagree!).

We never have vases for fresh flowers 😂🤷🏼‍♀️

If I told you we had unlimited fluffy, coordinating towels I’d be lying! You’ll usually find one (2 if you’re lucky!) Disney towels hanging in our bathroom.

I LOVED this chunk of wood our sink used to sit on but it was the most impractical thing ever. We had nowhere for storage so the is year I caved and let Craig buy the ugly bathroom unit- I’m still deciding…

I think people think cos it’s what we do I’ll instantly judge their home. I WILL NOT! It honestly doesn’t even cross my mind, I’ll always just be grateful if you welcome me in 😂

I may however knock a big light off if I’m lucky to stay long enough!

It’s just impossible to spend an evening somewhere with bad lighting, isn’t it?!

Don’t get us wrong, there’s nothing quite like a whole store changeover. But sometimes, in this retail game, it’s the cheap thrills that get you by on the daily…👉

Sometimes all you need is time (and the man who fits the lighting to realise on his own how dark a shelf has been for a longgggg time 👀)

Wooden plate racks for everything- plates, notebooks, posters- you name it.

This is up there! Shout out to Saltburns new tech shop for supplying a replacement keyboard the moment ours broke mid Christmas upload session.

Seriously though, this one’s up there.

As is this. How frustrating when you can’t find the simple tool for the job- hammer, screwdriver, nails - all of the above.

Dawns hidden forte. Next time you’re in store, see if you can spot one of her perfectly opened books 💁🏼‍♀️
