Please respond to the ‘Tying the Knot’ government proposals before September 24th!

We are sure you have by now seen and read the consultation document on reforming marriage law that was published by the Ministry of Justice at the end of July.

https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/tying-the-knot-reforming-weddings-law-in-england-and-wales/tying-the-knot-reforming-weddings-law-in-england-and-wales-consultation-document

If the proposals are carried through, it will bring much needed choice to weddings, making the option to marry more attractive for couples. The role of the independent celebrant is discussed fully.

This is your chance to tell the government what you would like to see happen and suggest ideas directly. It’s a public consultation so do ask your family and friends to respond as well.

HAVE YOUR SAY!

Planning a funeral is one of the most personal experiences you will ever navigate. It is a time for reflection and honouring a life, which is why many families worry that the process might feel like a rushed, impersonal routine—where a loved one is treated as just another appointment in a busy diary.

At Jonathan Terry Independent Funeral Directors here in Southampton, we believe it should be the exact opposite.

The Independent Difference
When you choose an independent, family-owned funeral director, you are choosing a service rooted in community and genuine compassion, rather than corporate quotas. Families are increasingly looking for the flexibility and personal touch that a local independent team can provide.

Moving Away from the Impersonal
The difference between a large corporate chain and an independent firm often comes down to the quality of care:

A Personal Connection: You aren't dealing with a rigid, standardised system. You are working with a dedicated team that offers one-to-one support from the first phone call to the final tribute.
True Flexibility: Because we aren't bound by corporate policies, we have the freedom to listen. Whether it’s a traditional service or a highly bespoke celebration of life, we have the flexibility to make it happen your way.
Local Accountability: Our reputation is built on our standing in the Southampton community. When you visit us in Bitterne or London Road, you are talking to neighbours who genuinely care. We aren't answering to shareholders; we are answering to you.

Choosing Care Over Corporate
Choosing an independent director often means more personal attention and a more transparent approach. Research from the industry shows that, on average, independent funeral directors offer a more cost-effective service; some UK data suggests that independent funerals average lower costs than those of large corporate chains. Crucially, when you choose local, profits stay within the community rather than flowing to distant parent companies.

At Jonathan Terry, we are here to ensure that your loved one’s final journey is handled with the dignity, sincerity, and respect they deserve. We are here to listen, to guide, and to give you the time you need—without ever making you feel like just another number.

If you are looking for a funeral director that puts your family first, we are here for you 24 hours a day.

This could be exciting!

This is why we do what we do.

Receiving words like these from a family we have supported means more to us than we can ever properly express.

When Elena and her sister came to us following the loss of their dad, David was there to listen, guide and support them through every decision. But their dad’s final journey didn’t end with the funeral.

His family wanted to take his ashes to Italy for his final resting place, which meant navigating additional arrangements, including a visit to the Italian Consulate. David was there to help organise what was needed so that, ultimately, the family could fulfil those final wishes.

Knowing they have now been able to complete the last part of their dad’s journey and take him to his final resting place in Italy is incredibly special.

For us, this is what being a family funeral director is about. It’s not simply arranging a funeral; it’s listening, understanding what matters to each family and doing everything we can to help make those wishes possible.

Thank you, Elena, for taking the time to share such kind words about David and our family. It was a privilege to care for your dad and to support you and your sister along the way.

💛 Our family, caring for your family.
