HOW MUCH MORE CAN SMALL BUSINESSES TAKE?

Running a small business like Synths & Wood should be about designing products, making them, packing orders and giving customers great service.

Instead, more and more of my time is being swallowed up by regulations, paperwork and compliance.

New EU requirements mean businesses like mine are having to deal with things like product identifiers, packaging information, recycling responsibilities, environmental compliance and additional records simply to send an order to a customer in Europe.

For a huge multinational company with compliance departments and teams of staff, this might just be another administrative task.

For a small independent business where one person is designing, manufacturing, photographing, listing, selling, packing and posting the products, it's a completely different story.

I already try to do things responsibly.

I aim to use environmentally friendly paper padded mailers rather than traditional plastic bubble envelopes.

I currently reuse the cardboard boxes that my packaging supplies arrive in.
I reuse and cut cardboard myself to provide extra protection for products rather than simply throwing it away.

My products are made in small quantities rather than mass-produced and shipped around the world by the container load.

Yet businesses like mine are increasingly expected to navigate complicated regulations and administration just to sell a relatively low-value product to someone in Germany, France, Italy or elsewhere in the EU.

There comes a point where the cost and time involved simply makes selling into certain countries no longer worthwhile.

And that is the sad part.

These regulations may be created with good intentions, but if they're not proportionate to the size of the business, they risk pushing thousands of small makers and independent businesses out of international markets altogether.

That doesn't just hurt businesses.

It reduces choice for customers, discourages entrepreneurship and makes it harder for small manufacturers to compete with the very large corporations that can easily absorb the extra costs.

I love what I do with Synths & Wood, and I want to spend my working day creating products for musicians — not becoming an unpaid expert in international compliance and paperwork.
Small businesses aren't asking for no rules.

We're asking for rules that recognise the difference between a one-person workshop and a multinational corporation.

If regulations continue piling up without sensible exemptions or simplified systems for micro-businesses, eventually many of us will have a very simple solution:

Stop selling to the EU.

And I don't think that benefits anybody.
