It was in 1995 that a group of guys were brought together in an old garage in Australia. It was during a bad economic time with a great many job losses. Some of these guys had lost their jobs, others were struggling with retirement and one man had recently lost his wife.

During this downturn social workers and families feared the worst for these men as they were isolating themselves and had no friends to call on.

The fellows had been invited to come to help fix lawnmowers for a community group. When they arrived there were mowers to fix, lots of tools and large pots of coffee.

Day one went by with little talking, no fixing but all the coffee was gone, day two more talking still no fixing, day three more talking, a little laughter and smiles when they left.

What family members noticed was more talk at the dinner table and an eagerness to get to the garage in the morning. The experiment never ended...... the organizers moved on, very happy that they proved that when you put a group of men in a space, with coffee and a task that they will start to talk while working "shoulder to shoulder" and new friendships will emerge.
....the experiment never did end, the organizers started calling the garage The Men's Shed....today there are over 3000 Men’s Sheds across the world, 1100 in the UK, 1200 in Australia, 165 in Canada and 44 in Alberta. All following the same route; some place to go, something to do and someone to talk to......each man has a story.....
