17th Century Oak & Single-Plank Elm Refectory Table

A wonderfully characterful 17th-century English refectory table, combining a remarkable single-plank elm top with a boldly carved oak base. The top has superb natural figuring, rich colour and the softened, worn surface that only comes with considerable age, while the carved bulbous supports and broad splayed feet give the table real presence.

Why we bought it: The single-plank elm top was the immediate attraction — a substantial piece of timber with wonderful grain, colour and centuries of character. We also loved the unusually decorative carved base. It is a very distinctive early table, but at just under two metres long remains a practical and versatile size.

Real rosewood or faux?

We had these two pieces out together today, ready to be packed for their new homes, and the comparison between them was too good not to photograph.

The bookcase on the right is rosewood, with all the wonderful natural variation and figuring you would expect. The cabinet on the left, however, is something rather different: its rosewood is painted.

Graining was used to imitate expensive and fashionable timbers, and when it was done well the results could be remarkably convincing. Here, the decoration has been carefully built up to suggest the rich, flowing figure of rosewood, right down to the smaller details. I particularly love the turned feet, where the painted grain follows the form beautifully.

Placed beside genuine rosewood, the skill involved becomes much easier to appreciate. One relies on the natural beauty of the timber; the other on the hand and eye of the decorator — and there is something rather charming about both.

(The bookcase is awaiting packing, hence the temporarily absent shelves!)

Both are now sold and shortly off to their new homes.

Edwardian Red Lacquer Chinoiserie Dressing Table, c.1900

A striking red lacquer Chinoiserie dressing table, richly decorated with gilt and painted landscapes, figures, birds and foliage. Substantially constructed in solid oak beneath the decorated finish, it is an unusually heavy and well-made piece. The kidney form adds interest, while four drawers make it practical as either a dressing table or writing desk.

Why we bought it: We were particularly drawn to the quality of the decoration and the substantial construction. The Chinoiserie work is detailed and characterful, while the solid oak beneath gives the table a reassuring weight and quality. It is an unusual piece, but also a very usable one.

Large Mahogany Storage Bench

A wonderfully unusual early 20th-century mahogany piece, originally a medical examination table and now ideal for repurposing as a hall or boot-room bench, window seat or daybed. Almost two metres long and 73cm tall, it combines a generous upholstered top with an adjustable backrest and useful cupboard storage below, all raised on handsome ball-and-claw feet.

Why we bought it: We loved how unusual and versatile it is. The combination of seating and substantial concealed storage is incredibly useful, while the rich mahogany and carved detailing give it real character. Reupholstered in the right fabric, we think it could look fantastic.

George III Mahogany Chest-on-Chest with Brushing Slide, c.1770

A particularly imposing George III mahogany chest-on-chest, with wonderful architectural detailing. The complete pierced fretwork frieze, blind-fret carved canted corners and brushing slide give it considerably more presence and interest than plainer examples, while the warm mahogany and tall, well-balanced proportions make it a striking piece of Georgian furniture.

Why we bought it: We loved how imposing it is. At nearly two metres tall it has real presence, but the elegant proportions stop it feeling heavy. The survival of the delicate pierced fretwork frieze was another major attraction, particularly alongside the blind-fret carved corners and brushing slide. And despite its decorative impact, it remains immensely practical, with eight drawers providing a huge amount of storage.

Pair of Oversized Victorian Oak Armchairs

A wonderfully substantial pair of Victorian oak armchairs, upholstered in rich red velvet, with carved uprights, turned stretchers and original brass castors. Their unusually broad, generous proportions give them real presence and make them particularly inviting chairs.

Why we bought them: We loved the scale. These are proper, generously proportioned country-house chairs with a wonderfully comfortable, inviting appearance. The deep red velvet works beautifully with the dark oak, and finding a matching pair with this much character and presence made them particularly appealing.

Large Regency Style Mahogany Cheval Mirror

An impressive full-length cheval mirror of exceptional scale, with richly coloured mahogany, architectural carved detailing and an elegant bevelled mirror plate.

Why we bought it: We loved its extraordinary 225cm height and quality of detail — a genuinely imposing statement mirror, yet beautifully proportioned and practical as a full-length dressing mirror.

William IV Plum Pudding Mahogany Corner Cupboard, c.1835

An impressive William IV corner cupboard in richly figured plum pudding mahogany, with elegant architectural detailing and exceptionally generous storage.

Why we bought it: We loved the extraordinary scale and beautiful figuring — at 280cm high it has real presence, while making clever use of a corner that might otherwise be wasted space.

Large Georgian Mahogany Tray-Top Night Commode, c.1800

An unusually substantial late Georgian commode with floral marquetry, barber’s-pole stringing and a distinctive gallery continuing around all four sides.

Why we bought it: We loved the unusual scale and decorative detail — particularly the marquetry. A characterful Georgian piece that is remarkably versatile in a modern interior.

George III Satinwood Octagonal Work Table, c.1800

An elegant late Georgian work table of unusual octagonal form, with beautifully figured satinwood, original lion-mask handles and its surviving fitted sewing interior.

Why we bought it: We loved the unusual form and wonderful satinwood, but particularly the remarkably complete original interior — a refined, compact piece that works just as beautifully as an occasional or lamp table today.
