Does your carpet still smell of cat or dog urine, even after you've cleaned it? If you're struggling with a persistent pet urine smell, feel free to message me. I'll explain what can realistically be done before you spend money on another cleaning attempt.
You might be surprised to learn that the carpet can look perfectly clean while the real problem is hiding underneath!
I've visited customers who have tried everything: carpet shampoos, supermarket stain removers, baking soda, deodorisers and even hired carpet cleaning machines. The smell disappears for a while, then suddenly comes back.
Why does this happen?
When a cat or dog urinates on a carpet, the liquid doesn't necessarily stay in the fibres. It can soak through the carpet backing, into the underlay and sometimes even reach the floorboards.
That's why simply washing the surface or spraying something that smells nice often doesn't solve the problem.
I recently dealt with exactly this situation for a returning customer in Wallasey.
Their carpet looked clean in normal daylight, but there was a persistent pet urine smell in the room.
Using a specialist UV light, I discovered several affected areas that were completely invisible to the naked eye.
I treated those areas using professional enzyme-based cleaning solutions, allowed the chemicals time to work and carried out targeted deep extraction.
Afterwards, I checked the carpet again under UV light. The previously glowing areas were no longer visible, and the customer was extremely pleased with the results.
But can professional carpet cleaning always remove urine smells completely?
Not always, and I think it's important to be clear about that.
If the contamination is relatively fresh and hasn't penetrated too deeply, professional treatment can often make a significant difference.
However, if a pet has repeatedly urinated in the same spot for months or years, the underlay or even the subfloor may be contaminated. In those situations, replacing the affected underlay might be the only sensible long-term solution.
I use professional hot water extraction equipment, specialist enzyme treatments and a Water Claw extraction tool when deeper extraction is needed.
My advice? If your pet has an accident, blot up as much liquid as possible, avoid scrubbing or soaking the carpet with household chemicals, and don't rely on fragrances to cover the smell.
And please don't feel embarrassed about pet accidents. Cats and dogs are part of the family, and these things happen!
