Did you know that yew trees have been associated with death, graveyards and immortality for centuries? 😮

Often referred to as the ‘tree of the dead’, yew has a fascinating history steeped in folklore and superstition…

🪦 They were believed to connect the living and the dead

In pre-Christian Britain, yew trees were associated with death, resurrection and everlasting life.

⚰️ They were believed to protect the dead

Yew trees have stood in British graveyards for centuries.

According to folklore, they were believed to protect the souls of the dead, and some traditions associated them with purifying burial grounds.

Yew branches were also carried at funerals and placed inside coffins as symbols of eternal life.

🔥 The Romans believed they grew in hell

According to the Woodland Trust, the ancient Romans believed yew trees grew in hell.

Their associations with death, darkness and poison gave them an especially sinister reputation.

And there’s more to its spooky reputation than just folklore. Almost every part of the tree is poisonous if eaten! ☠️

Thankfully, its timber has a much more beautiful side. With stunning grain patterns, rich colours and incredible character, yew is one of the most fascinating timbers we get to work with.

Before and after 😍

Rich brown tones, distinctive grain and a natural live edge make every walnut slab unique.

Walnut is a strong, durable hardwood that works beautifully for tables, desks and shelving, with plenty of character in every piece.

🪚 What would you make with it?
