You can’t beat this! 🥁

Check out this stunning early 19th Century antique mahogany drum table (circa 1830).

It’s called a drum table because its deep, round top resembles a drum.

This exquisite example has 8 drawers (4 faux drawers and 4 mahogany lined working drawers), a leather writing top, mounted on a three-sided platform base, terminating in carved scroll feet.

This is by far one of our favourite pieces!

We love our Black Forest bears at Martlesham Antiques

These 19th and 20th century pieces are both fine examples of Bavarian carving and practical, with our first bear being a stick/umbrella and our mama bear and cub being a coat stand.

Either of these (or both) would look ‘beary’ impressive in your home!

Heart of Glass. ❤️

We think this glass Lalique heart shaped dish is the real deal, but how would you spot a genuine piece from a fake?

You’d use our Martlesham Antiques quick guide of course! 👇

🔎 How to spot Lalique glass

✨ Check the base – look for Lalique France, Lalique or the older R. Lalique signature.

🌹 Look at the detail – Lalique is famous for beautifully moulded flowers, leaves, animals and figures.

❄️ Frosted + clear glass – that gorgeous contrast is a classic Lalique look.

⚖️ Feel the weight – Lalique crystal often feels substantial and beautifully finished.

🔍 Check the quality – crisp detail, smooth edges and a polished finish are good signs.

💎 Found “R. Lalique”? Pay attention! Genuine examples bearing René Lalique’s earlier mark can be particularly collectible.

Top tip: Never rely on the signature alone - check the design, quality and markings together.

Would you know a Lalique if you spotted one? 👀

If this desk could talk…✍️

Here we have a 19th Century inlaid mahogany desk, circa 1890, standing on square tapering legs terminating with brass castors.

This would have been used as a personal writing desk, for writing letters, keeping correspondence and managing household paperwork, somewhere in a late Victorian home to sit and deal with the day’s affairs.

The elaborate floral inlay suggests it was intended to be a handsome furnishing as well as a useful workspace.

Before inboxes, there were inlaid desks.

Legs can tell you a lot about an antique! 🪑🔍

The shape and construction of furniture legs can provide valuable clues about a piece’s age, style and origins.

Here are three distinctive designs to look out for:

🟤 Cabriole Leg — c.1700–1760
Popular during the Queen Anne and early Georgian periods, its elegant S-shaped curve flows from the knee down to the foot.

🟤 Barley-Twist Leg — c.1850–1900
A striking spiral-turned design associated with the Victorian Jacobean Revival and inspired by 17th-century furniture.

🟤 Tapered Spade Leg — c.1775–1800
Often seen in Georgian and Hepplewhite furniture, this refined, straight leg gradually narrows before finishing in a spade-shaped foot.

Dates can vary, especially with later revival pieces, but learning to recognise these details is a brilliant starting point when identifying antique furniture.

Which style would you choose for your home?

Oriental Opulence. 🐉

They simply don’t make statement furniture like this anymore…

This impressive Chinoiserie bureau bookcase features a striking red lacquered finish, beautifully decorated with intricate Chinese countryside scenes.

The carcass dates from the 18th century and was expertly lacquered during the early 20th century, combining generations of craftsmanship in one exceptional piece.

From its elegant swan-neck pediment and astragal-glazed doors to its fitted bureau interior and five graduated oak-lined drawers, there’s something remarkable to discover at every level.

A functional piece of furniture and a true work of art.
