A new Sebastian Cox treehouse has emerged in the Hertfordshire hills.

People have been building treehouses for centuries; from ancient civilisations choosing to build homes high up with good visibility and protection, to the imaginative treetop hideaways we know today. They inspire a great sense of adventure, a deep connection with nature and a view of the land from a different perspective.

I’m delighted to share one of our latest treehouses with you, designed and made for a Grand Atlas Tree in Hertfordshire. A structure conceived where cabinetry meets medieval timber framed buildings. It is an English-grown ash frame with pegged mortice and tenons clad with scorched larch and cleft chestnut. The windows are glazed and the railings are coppiced wood. The walkways are fitted around the undulations of the trunks and its branches become part of the architecture.

No two Sebastian Cox treehouses are the same. Each one is thoughtfully designed in conversation with the unique character and form of its host tree.

For all of our young tree enthusiasts out there! Sebastian’s ‘What’s in your plant pot?’ episode on oak is now available to watch in series 1 on iPlayer.

Sebastian introduces the Fact Pack to an acorn and they discover how acorns grow into oak trees, why oak trees are important for wildlife, and how wood can be used sustainably to make furniture and even a bicycle!

It was such a pleasure to welcome the crew to our workshop, explore the woods together and, most of all, to meet the very knowledgeable and fun Fact Pack!

Our Bayleaf collection is a true celebration of woven wood - an ode to its strength, beauty and versatility.

Each piece in our collection is carefully made by our makers in our workshop in Margate, using a process that keeps us deeply connected to the fibres of the trees that gave is the wonderful timber we adore working with.

The Bayleaf settle provides a cocooning place to sit; visually, acoustically and comfortably soft which can be upholstered in a fabric of your choice or in fabric supplied by us.

Whereas, the desk provides a secluded workspace, rich in material texture with elegantly tapered legs, three dovetailed drawers and wrap-around woven collar.

The floating bedside table is a wall hung shelf perfect for a cup of morning tea or evening read, with storage space beneath, partially hidden from view by a woven front panel.

We have been busily delivering statement outdoor tables this month, made from spectacular boards of wood, carefully and individually sourced.

From waney-edge 20 seater tables for woodland banqueting to more refined sets designed for elegant terraces, each piece is entirely bespoke and takes its design cues from hand-picked English-grown wood.

Calling our friends who make furniture in America!

We regularly send our work overseas. Increasingly, to the states. We’re looking to build our team of specialist makers in America who can visit sites, check and review our work in situ. Sometimes we need a steady hand and skilled eye to act on our behalf. If you’re a brilliant maker with experience working solid wood with hand and machine tools and would like to join our freelance team overseas, please send an email to [email protected] with a little bit of information about yourself, your training or professional experience and some photographs of your work.

I still adore every woven piece that I see going through our workshop, seeing our apprentices learn the point between fragility and strength of the different species of British-grown hardwood, through weaving.

Every maker will have experienced the pleasure of pulling the weft through the warp in one smooth action, and then felt the frustration of the next strip snapping over some short grain.

It’s a process that keeps us deeply connected to the fibres of the trees that gave us the wonderful timber we adore working with.

The Bayleaf armoire is full of subtle texture and thoughtful details. It is made from solid British-grown London plane in our Margate workshop using traditional timber frame construction joints. Inside, there can be a choice of shelves or a hanging rail alongside the four solid internal drawers, behind either solid, woven or glazed doors.
