Cute Gathered & Pleated lampshades are the perfect accessory for both a traditional and/or contemporary home. Quite an expensive purchase on the high street, however, they’re not that difficult to make. When folks ask me if they could make one, I ask, “can you thread a needle, can you sew on a button? If the answer is yes then I can teach you how to make one of these gorgeous little beauties.

Want to learn how to make your own bespoke lampshade? There’s a small group workshop All Gathered lampshade making workshop coming up, November 10th & 11th. This technique has a similar look to the Gathered & Pleated style.

It’s magical when the light goes on and students see their newly made lampshade light up for the first time. This was Claire’s first lampshade making workshops. She chose to use a linen fabric giving the shade a soft appearance with the beiges and greens that she loves. We then used a silk bias which really made the greens in the linen pop. Beautiful.

A little bit of magic happens when the light goes on. This was Helena’s first lampshade making workshops and she was a natural. Helena came with oodles of fabrics and chose 2 silk scarves that she worked in segments around the lampshade which gave her work a totally unique look. Absolutely gorgeous.

Day 2 on a Gathered & Pleated small group workshop is all about lining and trimmings. In this style of lampshade, the lining is stretched to the bottom ring and pleated to the top ring. The ladies then completed their lampshades with gimbal tidies and a bias trim.

Day 1 of a recent small group Gathered & Pleated lampshade workshop. Gathered & Pleated lampshades have pinch pleats to the top ring and gathers pulled to the bottom ring. On day 1 we started by discussing fabric suitability for this style of lampshades and selected accordingly from the stash we had brought to the workshop. We then wrapped our frame and began working on the face fabric.

Same fabric, different trimming.

Classic Tailored lampshades probably give the lampshade maker, the most design options of all the lampshade making techniques. Just one frame can be designed in multiple ways depending of on how you cover the panels. Then there’s all the wonderful fabric choices, not to mention trimmings.

Whether you’re working on your face fabric or a balloon lining, for the perfect fit it’s all about creating your own bespoke pattern. You can wing it a rolling your frame over your fabric and then covering seam errors with gimp. Makes a pretty good lampshade but will never look as good as a perfectly stretched fit with a bespoke pattern, fabric cut on the bias and a little time spent stretching into place.

Once you have the perfect fit secure everything in place using lampshade stitch. I have a little video about lampshade stitch. Want to find out more?

The basic technique remains the same. For the perfect fit it’s important to make your own bespoke pattern for each new frame style. You pattern will also double up for your balloon lining which is a bonus. Balloon linings are my go-to for tailored lampshades but it doesn’t have to be a balloon lining!
