How to Clean Outdoor Cushions

Outdoor fabrics have a PVC or PU coating which made them water repellent. A chemical additive or blocker is also added to make fabrics UV resistant.

When cleaning outdoor cushions, it is important to avoid using hard bristle brushes or any abrasive cleaning method to avoid damaging these protective layers.

Spot Cleaning

1. Brush off loose dirt.
2. Spray on a cleaning solution of water and mild soap.
3. Use a soft bristle brush to clean.
4. Allow cleaning solution to soak into the fabric.
5. Rinse thoroughly until all soap residue is removed.
6. Air dry.

Hand Washing

Soak fabric in a solution of 1/4 cup mild soap per gallon of lukewarm water. Use a sponge or very soft bristle brush to lightly agitate the spill. Then rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue and allow fabric to air dry.

Mold and Mildew

Machine wash fabric in cold water on delicate cycle with normal amounts of mild laundry detergent. Add up to 1 cup of bleach. Allow fabric to air dry.

Tips

• Make sure you test your fabrics on a conspicuous area prior to using any bleach.
• It is best to clean the entire surface area to avoid water rings and residue.
• The quicker you clean spills, the easier they can be to remove.

Blurring the Line between Indoor and Outdoor

The concept of blurring the line between indoor and outdoor has been championed by many award-winning architects and designers. Here is a pragmatic way of applying this concept.

The lounge area near my balcony gets a lot of sun during the day, so I put an outdoor furniture there, instead of an indoor piece, so it will not get damaged by UV light. This Garden Easy club chair from Blume Living has been at this spot over 5 years, yet it is still in very good condition today. It also blends very well with my upholstered sofa and gives the space a lighter feel.

What furniture is suitable for my windy rooftop?

Blume Living answers: To prevent outdoor furniture from blowing away in strong wind, some customers have asked us to increase the weight of furniture, some even requested furniture be bolted onto the ground. During typhoons, the wind can be so strong that the idea of fighting against it is quite futile.

If wind can blow through the furniture there is no need to fight against it. Below are some examples from Blume Living. This furniture is made of webbings, which are traditionally used in shipbuilding. Using webbings in an open weave creates no wind resistance, so strong wind has very little effect on them. You do need to bring all the cushions and pillows inside though.

As for tables, choose one where tabletop can be detached from the frame, so you can bring it inside. If the tabletop doesn’t come off, put table upside down, so the top is resting on the floor.

Should Outdoor Furniture be covered?

Covers for outdoor furniture are usually made of waterproof material. However, no matter how well the covers are made, water can still find its way in, either through zippers / seams. Water condensation will also form inside because of temperature change. Contrary to their intended purpose, furniture covers trap moisture inside and prevent it from getting dry. Subsequently, Mold and other problems will arise.

Furthermore, if the outdoor dining set or sofas are covered all the time, you are less likely to use them, because of the hassle of having to remove the cover and the need to clean them before every use.

At Blume Living, all our outdoor furniture is made to withstand the outdoor elements, so our advice is to let furniture breathe and get dry naturally in the air / sun. Give it a wipe if you want to use it when it is still wet. However, cushions and pillows must be put inside when it rains if they are not made of Quick Dry Foam.

Why use Quick Dry Foam for Outdoor Cushions?

Blume Living answers: Quick Dry Foam has larger holes than normal foam which allows water to go through. You can leave cushions made of Quick Dry Foam outside when it rains, saving you the hassle of having to bring the cushions in when it rains.

How does Quick Dry Foam impact the comfort level of cushions?

Blume Living answers: Quick Dry Foam is available in both soft and firm. What affect the comfort level of a sofa is primarily the back cushions. The cushions you sit on (seat cushions) should be firm. The back cushions should be soft so you can sink your weight into it.

A good example is Blume Living's Jibe collection. Its seat cushions are made of high density Quick Dry Foam, which is firmer and more durable than the softer version. Back cushions are made of fluff, like in throw pillows, so they are soft and very comfortable. There is no real need for any throw pillows.

On the other hand, Club collection’s design dictates that both back & seat cushions be made of foam. In this case, adding a few throw pillows will make the sofa more comfortable.

BRINGING INDOOR OUTSIDE – here is a pragmatic approach

Many outdoor furniture nowadays has such nice design, they can be placed indoor without looking out of place. For area with lots of sun exposure, using an outdoor sofa / chair instead of an indoor piece, can avoid it from being damaged by UV light.

One of them is Adrian McCarroll, founder of Original Vision who has been designing stunning properties for over 30 years. Their projects are definitely at the macro level. The idea here of putting an outdoor furniture inside where there is lots of sun light may seems small in comparison, none the less, for a household, I see this a pragmatic approach and an extension of this wider concept.
