This is a porcelain centrepiece- compote made by English firm Moore Bros and dates from 1880- 1890
In Victorian times they were used on a formal dining table to display fruit comports , desserts and extravagant floral arrangements.
Moore Bros porcelain was classed as luxury art and signalled to visiting guests that the hosts had refined taste.

These are known as a knife/cutlery rest. This particular design is of French origin and its closely associated with the French brand Olivier Saint Honore in Paris.
They were commonly used in Europe during the 18th and 19th century. The main purpose was to prevent cutlery staining tablecloths between courses. In those times, Etiquette suggested that once cutlery was used it shouldn't be placed back on table surface.
