There was a time when every respectable dining room had a piece like me.

A pedestal sideboard wasn't simply furniture—it was an essential part of family life. My cupboards stored the family's finest china, silver cutlery, table linen, wine and serving dishes, while my broad mahogany top became the place where meals were organised before making their way to the dining table.

In many larger Victorian and Edwardian homes, servants would have worked from sideboards like this, carefully arranging each course before serving the family and their guests. Behind every elegant dinner was a piece of furniture quietly doing its job.

I've witnessed Sunday dinners, Christmas celebrations, birthdays and countless conversations that echoed through the dining room. I wasn't just there to hold beautiful things—I was there to be part of family history.

Built by skilled craftsmen from fine mahogany, I was made to last, not for decades, but for generations.

As fashions changed, I was set aside. But quality craftsmanship never truly goes out of style.

At The Dublin Polishers, my finish was carefully revived using traditional French polishing techniques, allowing the natural depth and beauty of the mahogany to shine once again. Every polished surface reflects not only the skill of the craftsman who made me, but also the care taken to preserve me for the future.

Furniture like this was never meant to be disposable.

It was built with pride, cared for with pride, and now... ready to begin another chapter.

Some pieces are priceless... not because of what they're worth, but because of the memories they carry. ❤️🕰️

This beautiful mantle clock was kindly gifted to us by a lovely lady whose father treasured it for many years. Every week, without fail, he would wind it using the little key hidden behind the back door, keeping it faithfully ticking and chiming through the decades.

Sadly, at some point in its life, it suffered a heavy fall. The impact left a large piece missing from the top of the case, snapped one of the front feet clean off, and damaged the original movement beyond repair.

We carefully rebuilt the damaged timber, repaired and glued the broken foot back into place, and then gave the case nothing more than a gentle clean. It was amazing to see the timber come back to life. Beneath years of dust was the same beautiful finish it would have worn when it first left the factory in 1950.

Although the original movement couldn't be saved, we fitted a replacement clock movement, and once again it keeps perfect time and chimes proudly on the hour—just as it would have all those years ago.

Made in China around 1950, it's not a rare or valuable clock. We even spotted one online for around €20. But to us, that couldn't matter less.

Its real value is in the life it has lived, the hands that wound it every week, and the memories it quietly carries.

Today it has found a new home with us, where it will continue to be loved, admired, and looked after for many years to come.

A huge thank you to the lovely lady who trusted us with something that meant so much to her family. We feel incredibly grateful to have been given the chance to give it a second life.

Sometimes the greatest restorations aren't about antiques worth thousands—they're about preserving someone's story. ❤️

Keeping the Craft Alive! 🪵✨

We had a fantastic time at the Rediscovery Centre this past Saturday for our Level 2 French Polishing Workshop! It was a pleasure to guide such an enthusiastic group as they brought along their own special pieces and got hands-on with this traditional craft.

The day focused on the art of padding—the traditional technique of using a cloth rubber to apply shellac in smooth, rhythmic, circular motions. By building up countless ultra-thin layers, this method creates the rich depth, clarity, and mirror-like finish that French polishing is renowned for.

There’s something truly special about passing on a craft that has been used to finish some of the world’s finest furniture since the mid-1800s. We’re proud to help keep these time-honoured skills alive and share them with the next generation of makers, restorers, and enthusiasts.

A Memoir of a Little 1950s Cabinet

I began my life in the 1950s, standing tall in a quiet parlour. I wasn’t a grand or expensive piece, but I held the "best" ornaments, and I was my owner's pride and joy. I belonged to Jo's uncle, and after he passed, her dad kept me in the family home for many years, where I was cherished as a piece of their history.

Eventually, I was passed down to Jo, who works alongside Jay at The Dublin Polishers. For a long time, I stayed as I was, preserving those vintage memories. But Jo knows me better than anyone, and she knew I had more life left in me. Over time, I’ve been reinvented again and again:

I went bold and fierce, dressed in black with a wild animal-print interior and gilded feet.

I grew into a moody, romantic soul, draped in florals and glowing with an ethereal blue light.

And now, I’ve found my most vibrant chapter yet. Yesterday, I moved into a new home—a games room for Jo’s brother. He’s mad for reggae, so I’ve been transformed into a tribute to the music and the message: "One Love, One Heart."

I’ve been a parlour keeper, a style statement, a romantic display, and now a celebration of music. Looking back at where I started, I am so lucky to stay in this family, passing from hand to hand, always loved, and always evolving.
