What a fantastic day we had on Saturday at the Rediscovery Centre in Ballymun! 🪑✨
Jay & Jo from The Dublin Polishers had the pleasure of running another hands-on French Polishing Workshop, and we were absolutely delighted with the amazing work the participants produced. 👏
It’s always brilliant to see old furniture being brought back to life and to pass on some of the traditional skills, tips and tricks of French polishing.
If you have an old piece of furniture or a treasured family heirloom that you’d love to restore yourself, why not join us at one of our upcoming workshops?
Check out the Rediscovery Centre’s website for details on more workshops. 🪵✨

“Allow me to introduce myself...”
I was born over 200 years ago, during a time when entertaining was an art and dinner parties were grand occasions.
I wasn't made to hold flowers. I wasn't made to gather dust in a corner.
I was made to keep fine wine cool.
In fact, I was never meant to stand alone. I was originally made as one of a pair, proudly flanking a dining room or grand hall, creating perfect symmetry while keeping the finest wines chilled for elegant evenings. Sadly, over the centuries many of us became separated, making it rather special when one of us survives.
Before refrigeration, I would have held a removable metal liner filled with ice, keeping bottles of wine perfectly cool throughout long dinners while guests admired my rich mahogany, painted decoration and elegant gilt details. I wasn't just practical—I was part of the occasion.
Time, however, had taken its toll. My finish had dulled, my colours had faded, and I'd lost much of the beauty that made me such a centrepiece.
Then I met Jay & Jo... The Dublin Polishers.
With patience, skill and a genuine respect for my history, they carefully revived my original beauty rather than trying to make me something I was never meant to be. My mahogany glows once more, my painted decoration can be admired again, and I'm ready to take pride of place for generations to come.
I may no longer be keeping bottles cool with blocks of ice...
..but I can still steal the show in any room.

A Memoir of a Little 1950s Cabinet
I began my life in the 1950s, standing tall in a quiet parlour. I wasn’t a grand or expensive piece, but I held the "best" ornaments, and I was my owner's pride and joy. I belonged to Jo's uncle, and after he passed, her dad kept me in the family home for many years, where I was cherished as a piece of their history.
Eventually, I was passed down to Jo, who works alongside Jay at The Dublin Polishers. For a long time, I stayed as I was, preserving those vintage memories. But Jo knows me better than anyone, and she knew I had more life left in me. Over time, I’ve been reinvented again and again:
I went bold and fierce, dressed in black with a wild animal-print interior and gilded feet.
I grew into a moody, romantic soul, draped in florals and glowing with an ethereal blue light.
And now, I’ve found my most vibrant chapter yet. Yesterday, I moved into a new home—a games room for Jo’s brother. He’s mad for reggae, so I’ve been transformed into a tribute to the music and the message: "One Love, One Heart."
I’ve been a parlour keeper, a style statement, a romantic display, and now a celebration of music. Looking back at where I started, I am so lucky to stay in this family, passing from hand to hand, always loved, and always evolving.
Which of my lives was your favorite?
