What a complete honour it is to design and create this bespoke piece for the Today Show and their special broadcast from Sheen Falls Lodge, Kenmare, Ireland this Friday 16th October. Thank you to Erin, Evan and wider team from NBC and to Brian and team at Sheen Falls Lodge for giving us the freedom and trust to create something truly of place for this event. Design description as follows…
KERRY HILLS
Bespoke Marquetry Broadcast Table
Kerry Hills takes its inspiration from the distinctive landscape surrounding Kenmare, where gently rolling Cork and Kerry hills and mountains, wooded shorelines and glimpses of the sea are rendered in hand crafted marquetry using natural wood veneers. Together these elements capture the calm beauty, layered forms and constantly changing scenic horizons of the local landscape.
Rather than depicting one particular mountain or viewpoint, the motif expresses the character and rhythm of place and feeling. While the NBC TODAY logo acts as a central focal point, the rays of the sun end on the horizon line.
The use of natural timber veneers reinforces this connection to place. European walnut forms the quadrant diamond-patterned tabletop, while the rim incorporates bird’s-eye maple, featuring walnut, sycamore, burr chestnut and burr oak. The contrasting grains, tones and textures create depth and a rich interpretation of the Kerry landscape, becoming a visual journey that flows around the table.
The name Kerry Hills reflects both the physical landscape and the wider idea behind the piece: a table rooted in its surroundings, bringing the landscape of Kerry into the setting through visual storytelling and a place where people gather, talk and broadcast.
