This 1804 oil on canvas portrait by French Neoclassical artist Louis Lafitte (1770–1828), titled “Ritratto di donna in abito Impero” (Portrait of a Woman in an Empire Dress), is a premier example of early 19th-century French aristocratic portraiture. Painted during the exact year of Napoleon Bonaparte’s coronation, this large-format piece (117 × 89 cm) captures the height of Napoleonic high fashion and societal refinement. The subject is depicted in a striking Empire-line silhouette dress, featuring a vibrant red bodice beneath a low, lace-lined neckline and a flowing white skirt. Her status is further elevated by meticulous details: a sheer dark lace veil lifted delicately by her right hand, an exquisite coral or carnelian pendant necklace with matching bracelets, and a small bouquet of wildflowers held in her left hand to symbolize virtue and romantic sentiment. Set against a dignified architectural backdrop of a stone column and balustrade, the composition utilizes the smooth brushwork and soft contours characteristic of Neoclassical art to project quiet elegance. The painting is currently in very good condition
