Bakuba – word in Bantu that means "Kuba People" an African population settled in the region between the rivers Kasai and Sankuru (in the south eastern Democratic Republic of Congo). The Kuba are famous for their decorative works in wood and raffia, and are the producers of the so-called "Kasai Velvet". The fabrics are made from the fibers of the leaves of the raffia palm, woven and decorated with a procedure similar to that of velvet. Their size comes from nature itself: the fibers obtained from the feathery leaves of the palm are between 50 and 60 cm in length. Each piece is soaked, beaten, and handwoven, so as to assume the characteristics of soft shiny silk. Kuba People reduce their whole world in geometric abbreviations and symbols. The structure of the design are three elements point, line and surface. The fundamental geometric forms are the square with its subdivisions (which show the shape of the triangle, hexagon, and octagon), the twists and turns and diagonal crossings. Due to the partial coloring of the surfaces there are different levels of observation. Find out more about the world of Bakuba and request our products on Fb.
