today a vote for Helium Improvement Proposal 51 (HIP51) went live. HIP51 is a community proposal that introduces the framework for Helium to become a multi-network, multi-token protocol.

with other networks eager to join our mission, from 5G to WiFi and VPN, HIP51 has the potential to unlock more utility with HNT as the economic engine, while staying committed to our mission of decentralizing all networks.

Light Hotspot Activation Plan Owner -maker

Light Hotspot activation day is coming! This is the biggest change to the network since the introduction of Validators. Even though we’ve tested the chain variable activation sequence a few times on Testnet, the scale is much larger on mainnet. To ensure our network is able to endure this change, we will be slowly ramping up Challenges on the network over several days.

During this ramp up, you will see your Hotspot rewards fluctuate and slow down for the first few days - not to worry though; this is expected and affects all Hotspots equally.

To start, we will slow down the challenge rate to 100 challenges per block. Since we have over 3000 Validators, it’s expected that not every Validator will challenge at the same time. The core team will then monitor Network, Validator, and PoC performance for a few hours. Once we are satisfied with Network performance, we will slowly ramp it up as outlined below. The goal is for the network to achieve Challenge rate parity before Light Hotspots, which in this case equates to 800 challenges per block.

Those with a keen eye will notice that there is a new chain variable controlling the number of challenges on the network. The old chain variable (poc_challenge_interval) which dictated how often a Hotspot challenges (denoted in blocks) will no longer be used. By issuing a new chain variable (poc_challenge_rate) that dictates how many challenges can occur in a block, it will allow the network to scale challenges alongside network growth.

We will be making announcements as we advance through the Chain Variable Schedule once we start rolling. No action is required for Hotspot Owners, Validators, and Makers

-maker Light Hotspot Update: Upgrade blockchain components by May 11

The Light Hotspots activation is the largest update to the Helium network since Validators last year and the core developers have been working hard to ensure a smooth deployment.

This week the core team identified a few changes that require another update by various network participants and is moving the activation date to provide participants ample time to upgrade. No action required by Hotspot owners.

To ensure blockchain components continue to work as expected we request all network participants upgrade their software to the appropriate version listed below by 2022-05-11 00:00:00 UTC. Activation of Light Hotspots will take place shortly after.

Note some components will have releases later this week but we wanted to communicate this change early. We’ll continue to update this announcement as releases become available.

As a Hotspot owner, what do I need to do?

As long as your Hotspot is plugged into the internet, nothing! Hotspot manufacturers will push the updated software to your Hotspot and it will automatically update.
