Restoration of an Oil Painting

Before

An oil painting on canvas of a woman burning myrrh was slashed, scratched and badly damaged but here we wouldn’t let this oriental beauty remain as such, we made sure she came back from what seems irreparable and fan her ‘mabkhara’ as if nothing happened.
Burning myrrh symbolizes purification, protection and spiritual connection, and we wish you a happy new year with a renewed sense of purpose, peace & prosperity.

Restoration of an Antique Cabinet

Before

A Napoleon III period ebonized wood cabinet featuring elegant wood marquetry and intricate bronze corner mounts, hinges, handle & lock, had faced extensive damage to its doors and top, and was in much need of expert repair and care.

This piece is a simple example of the refined aesthetic that characterized the Napoleon III period in France, in the mid-19th century, and showcases a masterful combination of materials and craftsmanship.

The cabinet is made from a dark wood, likely ebony, providing a dramatic backdrop for the refined decorative elements

The small paintings found on Napoleon III cabinets are typically hand-painted panels created using a technique known as Vernis Martin, an imitation of expensive East Asian lacquer, they usually feature a lustrous, lacquered surface, often with a black, green, or golden-red background.

Restoration of an Antique Tortoiseshell

Before

Restoring antique tortoiseshell is delicate and requires expert handling, it also involves adhering to ethical guidelines, primarily by using modern, conservation-grade substitutes for any repairs and never sourcing new, real tortoiseshell.

The international trade of hawksbill sea turtle shell has been banned since 1977 under the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) treaty due to the species being critically endangered, this one seems to be a green sea turtle shell (Chelonia mydas).

Owning existing antiques is generally legal, and these shells are sometimes sold as taxidermy specimens, caring for them means participating in a sustainable practice of reuse and preservation, rather than contributing to modern consumerism and waste.

The piece serves as a historical object, a reminder of past practices that are no longer acceptable today.

Restoration of Antique Consoles

Before

Two elegant Chinese Ming style black and gilt kiln dried Rosewood console tables were left aside and weathered over for an extensive amount of time, and it was up to our team to sand them down, prime them, prepare them, then lacquer and gild them back to their original state.

It’s a pleasure working on such pieces, as they showcase the stunning complexity of Ming joinery and woodwork, solid and sturdy, yet lightweight and practical. The decorative style of that period is very modern and compliments perfectly contemporary home decor, antiqued metalwork and wooden spiral lattices included.

One of the tables has three drawers, offering convenient private storage and the other serves more as an end table, both were completed with a discreet hand-rubbed distressed black lacquer finish.
