Meet the Maker: Daan Simons – Crafts Council Nederland ‘Ik ben houtbewerker met een voorliefde voor houtverbindingen. Inspiratie haal ik uit de (Japanse) eeuwenoude houtverbindingstechnieken, waar geen lijm of schroef aan te pas komt. Ik vervaardig tafels, sokkels en andere stukken uit massief duurzaam geproduceerd hout —Iepenhout, Eik, Es, Peer of ...

Totem

I am happy to announce that I'll be working with talented young and wise illustrator/visual artist . For the coming four months we will work on a project called Totem.

With this project we explore and suggest a temporary use of the traditional totem; a spiritual tool that helps us to (re)establish a relationship with our environment.

In addition to being a means of connection, the totems will also take the form of connections, more specifically: wooden joints. We will be researching methods to make the art of joinery and illustrative drawings blend and reinforce eachother.

The trajectory is generousely supported by through the 'building talent' grand.

Are you a starting designer, and would you like to work together on imagining and making contemporary totems out of wood – joint together?

Then apply to the Open Call Building Talent 2022 of the Creatieve Industrie BEFORE DECEMBER 7th

The Open Call Building Talent offers 22 experienced designers and makers (Tsugi Woodworks being of of them) the opportunity to engage a talented starter (you?) over a period of four months (starting march 2023) through a collaborative process, making room for an in-depth research study or experiment.

About Totem ki No:

How can the ancient tradition of totem-making help us make the value of nature into something tangible in this day and age? Totem ki no suggests a contemporary use for the totem: an object that helps us establish or rejuvenate a relationship with our surroundings; a spiritual tool made of wood. In addition to being a means of connection, the totems also take the form of connections, or more specifically, wooden joints. Potential subjects for the sculptures I want to work on together are the power of lightning, a connection between man and air, and the energy of the turtle.

Korte film gemaakt in samenwerking met Gonzalo Fernandez en met een super coole soundtrack van Tczeebo.

'Table #6 werpt een poëtische blik op het maakproces van een houten tafel die in elkaar gezet wordt als een shintotempel - zonder lijm of schroef. Een eeuwenoude puzzel ter ere van de boom. De kijker volgt stap voor stap het maakproces van een stapel perenhouten planken tot een elegant vervaardigde tafel'.

One spot left in the 3-days workshop ‘woodjoinery’

De eerste 3 zaterdag van oktober geef ik een workshop 'houtverbindingen maken' via Crafts Council Nederland.

Gebruikmakend van handgereedschappen gaan we eenvoudige houtverbindingen maken. Verschillende delen hout aan elkaar verbinden zonder gebruik van lijm of schroef.
Stap voor stap doorlopen we het gehele maakproces: ontwerp, uitwerking (aftekenen, recht zagen met de trekzaag, hakken en steken met beitel en hamer) en afwerking in de vorm van kantjes breken, schuren en lakken, oliën, beitsen of branden.
