Gerard de Hoop Design Product, Furniture and Architectural Designer Gerard de Hoop, is a multifaceted and driven designer from the Netherlands.

In 1995, he completed his studies in Architectural and Interior Design at the Art Academy Minerva in Groningen, setting the foundation for his creative career. Gerard’s work can be best described as minimalistic, functional, versatile, playful, and conceptual. He employs simple geometric shapes and clean lines to craft aesthetically pleasing compositions that evoke a sense of tension and surprise. A number of his pieces are included in the collections of renowned international design brands.

Concept voor de invulling van een uit gebruikgenomen gaswinlocatie in de provincie Groningen.

Op een voormalige gaswinlocatie in de provincie Groningen komen hoge, glimmende stalen gastransportbuizen uit de grond. De buizen zijn buiten gebruik. Ze staan geclusterd op een rond betonnen platform, licht gebogen en in verschillende hoogtes. Samen maken ze zichtbaar dat deze plek onderdeel was van een groter ondergronds systeem.

Elke buis fungeert als een soort periscoop en verwijst naar een andere gaswinlocatie in de omgeving. In enkele hoge buizen is een camera geplaatst, gericht op een andere voormalige gaslocatie waar een soortgelijk kunstwerk staat. Via de omliggende kleinere platforms kan de bezoeker, op een scherm in een buis, het live beeld bekijken. Zo ontstaat een bovengrondse, virtuele verbinding tussen locaties die vroeger alleen ondergronds met elkaar verbonden waren. Het netwerk van de gaswinning wordt opnieuw ruimtelijk en direct ervaarbaar. Op de andere platforms wordt de geschiedenis van de aardgaswinning getoond. De beelden laten zowel de welvaart zien die het gas heeft gebracht als de schadelijke gevolgen voor landschap en bewoners.

De betonnen platforms waarop de buizen staan zijn geordend volgens de chemische structuur van methaan.
Vier cirkels staan voor waterstof en één cirkel voor koolstof. Samen verwijzen ze naar CH₄, het hoofdbestanddeel van aardgas.

Rond het kunstwerk ontwikkelt zich een biodivers landschap van nat grasland, riet en andere inheemse vegetatie. De voormalige gaslocatie krijgt daarmee een nieuwe landschappelijke betekenis, terwijl het verleden zichtbaar en aanwezig blijft.
