Last week, Kendra headed down to Dunedin for the New Zealand Institute of Forestry's 2026 Conference.

It was a great few days of CPD, conversations and learning, and a chance to see some of the really impressive things happening across the industry. From innovative technology and clever new approaches to the passionate people finding practical solutions to complex challenges.

A highlight of the trip was the NZIF Awards Dinner at the iconic Larnach Castle. Having been named Young Forester of the Year in 2025, Kendra was honoured to return this year to present the award to Hamish Scown of Pan Pac Forest Products. A huge congratulations to Hamish on a well-deserved recognition!

One of the biggest takeaways from the conference was the reminder that our industry is full of some seriously clever, innovative and passionate people. It was great to see so many people focused on finding practical solutions, sharing knowledge and helping move the industry forward.

A great few days reconnecting with the wider forestry sector and returning home to Gisborne with plenty of ideas and inspiration.

Zero shortage of enthusiasm here.

We plant them today, but these trees are for tomorrow - and for many generations after us.

Our team have been busy this week planting mānuka and tōtara from Kauri Park Group to establish a thriving riparian margin along the waterway and bring native vegetation back into the landscape.

It’s hands-on, sometimes muddy, occasionally steep mahi - but judging by the smiles, the crew aren’t complaining!

Last week the Logic Forest Solutions and Cornerstone Forest Services Teams got their hands dirty at Doneraille Park in Gisborne to begin Stage One of two stages of planting which will see areas of the park replanted in natives.

Following Cyclone Gabrielle, this area suffered extensive damage. The St Leger Bridge was severely impacted, and many of the mature native trees that once lined the Hangaroa River were lost after being smothered by silt. While recovery will take time, every tree planted is a step towards rebuilding a more resilient landscape.

Using native species that naturally belong in this environment, this planting will restore habitat, strengthen biodiversity in the park, and help shape Doneraille Park into an even more beautiful place for future generations to camp, explore, and connect with nature.

With the planting complete, the focus now shifts to giving these young natives the best chance to thrive - starting with keeping the local goats at bay!

Friday energy, but make it feathered.

While working in Ōhiwa Forest, George and James from A Edwards Contracting Ltd recently spotted a kiwi undertaking a surprise compliance visit in the harvest area.

Whakatane Kiwi Trust's Jesse Emery was called in and the kiwi was safely relocated back into the forest.

The kiwi has now been officially named “Logic”.

Happy Friday from the Logic crew.
