𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀: 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀’ 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗪𝗼𝗼𝗱𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁
Fernan Canja Bornales, a 40-year-old entrepreneur and father of six, has always possessed a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Though he holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication, his heart has consistently leaned toward business and creativity. As a child, he learned the ropes of selling through his parents’ sari-sari store, where he sold goods like Milo and Ovaltine to his classmates. This early exposure to business helped shape his passion for entrepreneurship—something he continued to pursue throughout his life.
Fernan’s journey into the business world has been one of trial and error, with each experience shaping his resilience and determination. At the age of 16, while studying at Mindanao State University, he launched his first venture—an arts and sign shop that catered to students and teachers. He ventured into multi-level marketing (MLM) at 18 and later opened a printing shop in Davao in 2009. Despite these early attempts, it wasn’t until the pandemic hit in 2019 that Bornales found his true calling in woodcraft—a venture that would soon flourish nationally.
The turning point came when Fernan discovered his passion for woodworking, crafting furniture and event supplies using sustainable materials like used pallets. This business not only appealed to his artistic ability but also aligned with his desire to create eco-friendly products.
“I chose this business because it allows me to apply my creativity,” he explains, “using sustainable materials and converting used pallets into beautiful creations.”
Fernan’s custom wood furniture and event backdrops have now reached both local and national markets, with the business gaining a strong foothold.
His product offerings are diverse and cater to various sectors, including homes, cafes, restaurants, and event organizers. His company produces custom furniture, kiosks, counters, event supplies, trophies, plaques, and even offers engraving services.
“Our ability to cater to all our clients’ needs and deliver fast, quality service sets us apart from our competitors,” Fernan says.
His dedication to ensuring customer satisfaction has been key to his growing reputation and client base.
To attract customers, Fernan emphasizes the uniqueness of his rustic creations and the quality of his craftsmanship. Social media platforms, particularly Facebook, have played a significant role in marketing his products and services. Word-of-mouth referrals, coupled with online visibility, have helped him gain traction in the competitive woodcraft industry. Yet, his journey has not been without challenges—especially when it comes to sourcing materials.
“The supply of wood pallets has become more expensive, so we had to adjust our prices and sometimes shift to using plyboards or good lumber like mahogany,” he shares.
Fernan’s relationship with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has been instrumental in his business growth. Starting as a supplier for DTI exhibitors, he was invited to join Yaman Gensan in 2023, where he won the Top Grosser Exhibitor and Best Booth Award. He recalls how DTI’s programs gave him the confidence to continue his woodcraft business when he was close to giving up.
“The MSME Mentoring Program taught me how to run my business correctly, and DTI’s continuous support through training has helped me grow.”
Since engaging with DTI, Fernan has experienced significant changes in his business. His sales have increased by 75% compared to the previous year, and his market reach now extends nationwide. Institutional buyers such as Gryks Food House and the Philippine National Police (PNP) Region 12 have become loyal clients. With continued guidance from DTI, Fernan has expanded his product line, incorporating acrylic into his plaques and trophies—a testament to his constant innovation and growth as an entrepreneur.
Through his journey, Fernan has learned the value of business management, particularly in handling finances and managing human resources. His advice to fellow entrepreneurs is to evaluate their businesses carefully and continue learning.
“Entrepreneurship is not just about passion; it’s about managing your resources well and constantly evolving,” he says.
Fernan Bornales’ story is a reminder that resilience, creativity, and the right support can turn even the most challenging ventures into successful businesses.
