B**g Go pushes for government interventions to support small farmers amid inflation and other economic challenges

Senator Christopher “B**g” Go calls on government to provide more support to small farmers as they are the backbone of the nation's economy and play a crucial role in maintaining the country's food security.

Go, member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, has been supportive of legislative efforts aimed at uplifting the lives of Filipino farmers, particularly in these challenging economic times. He contributed to the passage of Republic Act No. 11953, known as the New Agrarian Emancipation Act, which he co-sponsored and co-authored in the Senate.

This landmark legislation condones loans, including interests, penalties, and surcharges, incurred by agrarian reform beneficiaries. By doing so, it aims to alleviate the financial burdens faced by over 600,000 agrarian reform beneficiaries across the Philippines, thereby enhancing their economic resilience.

In addition to this, Go also authored and co-sponsored RA 11960, or the One Town, One Product (OTOP) Philippines Act. This law decentralizes economic opportunities by empowering each town and province to develop and promote their unique products.

By doing so, it not only fosters community-led innovation but also bridges the urban-rural economic divide, providing small farmers with more avenues to market their produce.

Go also emphasized the importance of encouraging end users to directly purchase from producers. This not only helps the farmers but also ensures that consumers get fresh and affordable produce.

"It's not only about us not needing to import from other countries. It's about recognizing and supporting our local farmers and agrarian reform beneficiaries,” Go added.

As the nation navigates through economic challenges, Go reiterated that the most important thing is that no one goes hungry.

"Dapat po, walang magutom. Importante po dito tiyan ng bawat Pilipino," he said.

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, inflation rate rose to 5.3 percent in August, up from 4.7 percent in July. The increase in inflation was primarily due to the faster rise in prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages.

Specifically, inflation for food and non-alcoholic beverages accelerated to 8.1 percent in August. The year-on-year growth rate for rice prices rose to 8.7 percent from 4.2 percent.

The government has implemented a cap on rice prices to reduce costs and penalize hoarding, although this measure has sparked discussions about its impact on both farmers and consumers.

The estimated total weight of seized shabu is more or less 0.5 gram with standard drug price of Php 1, 000.00.

Another accomplishment of Valencia City Police Station together with PDEU, Buk PIU, RSOU 10, RDEU 10, Bukidnon PIT and RIU 10 conducted joint Buy-Bust operation at Purok 5, Barangay Lumbo, Valencia City, Bukidnon which resulted in the arrest of a 42 year old male, married, jobless and a resident of P-5, Barangay Tubigon, Maramag, Bukidnon. The estimated total weight of seized shabu is more or less 1.14 gram with an estimated Standard drug price of Php 7,552.00.

Malaybalay City Police Station personnel conducted buy-bust operation with at Purok 6, Barangay 9, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon that resulted to the arrest of a 20 years old male, single, laborer and a resident of Purok 5, Barangay 9, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon and one minor. The estimated total weight of shabu is .88 grams with estimated standard drug price of Php 5,984.00

Personnel from 1st Bukidnon Provincial Mobile Force Company together with the personnel from Malaybalay City Police Station and PIU, Bukidnon conducted joint operation at Purok 3, Barangay Dalwangan, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon which resulted in the arrested of a 40 year old male, married, security guard and a resident of Purok-9, Barangay Managok, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon for violation of Art. 248 of RPC (Murder) with criminal case no. 17946-07 with no bail recommended signed by Judge Isobel C Barroso of Branch 8, Tenth Judicial Region, RTC-10 dated December 8, 2014.

Personnel from Pangantucan Municipal Police Station conducted operation at Vismin Village, Poblacion, Pangantucan, Bukidnon which resulted in the arrest of a 48-year-old male, married, and resident of Vismin Village, Poblacion, Pangantucan, Bukidnon by virtue of WOA for the crime of Violation to PD 705 under Criminal Case Number 21637-11 issued by Judge Benison M. Mahawan of Regional Trial Court Branch-10, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon dated September 28, 2022 with no bail bond indicated.

Quezon Municipal Police Station personnel police operation which resulted in the arrest of 34-year-old male, married, farm laborer and a resident of Purok 2 Minongan, Quezon, Bukidnon by virtue of Warrant of Arrest for the Crime of Attempted Murder with CC no. 23156-12 issued by Judge Josefine Gentiles-Bacal of RTC, 10th Judicial Region, Branch 10, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon dated June 4, 2012 with recommended bail bond of Php120,000.00.
