Fisherman's Day in Portugal

Today we celebrate not only the fishermen, but also the women who brought the sea to land. 🌊🧺

The VARINA Low Table is a tribute to the Varinas—strong and determined women who carried baskets of fish on their heads, with wheels that lightened the weight and showed resilience.

After 25 years, the first cork, called "virgin cork," is carefully removed ("desboia"). After 9 more years, the second harvest ("secundeira") takes place. Only after an additional 9 years can third cork be obtained ("amadia"), suitable for cork stoppers. This cycle repeats every 9 years, using the harvested cork for stoppers. Any leftover cork, including virgin and secundeira, is used in various products made from crushed cork.
