A chair can be built to last for decades. But what happens when it no longer meets the needs of the people using it?

New research from 2026 explores how neuroinclusive workplace design could help create workplaces that remain useful for longer. By offering people more choice and making it easier to adapt spaces as needs change, we may reduce the risk of functional obsolescence – when something still works but no longer meets people's needs.

On World Sustainability Day, we're highlighting three important aspects of sustainability: environmental, social and economic.

At EFG, this means making responsible material choices, promoting fair working conditions throughout the supply chain and designing furniture for long-term use, with components that can be repaired or replaced.

Good design considers what happens when it's time to take things apart.

Evo is built with circularity in mind from the very start. The 3D-knitted textile is made in one piece, without seams or folds, reducing material waste and eliminating the need for traditional foam upholstery. And because the components aren’t permanently joined with stitching or adhesives, individual parts can be separated, replaced and recycled.

Which materials will shape the environments of tomorrow?

The demands placed on materials are constantly evolving. Low climate impact, transparency, reuse and recyclability are becoming increasingly important, while changing workplaces are creating new expectations of materials – demanding greater adaptability and flexibility. Some details are designed to be seen. Others are designed to be felt.

Ori’s soft, sculptural expression is inspired by origami. Its faceted back and rounded curves give the sofa its distinctive shape. But some of its most thoughtful design decisions are hidden beneath the surface.

To create the right balance between support and comfort for a sofa designed for work, a groove was milled into the wooden frame to add flexibility. Even the recessed base has a purpose, giving Ori a lighter, almost floating expression.

Some of the smartest design decisions are the ones you hardly notice.

Take U-tray, our cable trough. At first glance, it’s simply a way to keep cables out of sight. Look closer, and every detail of its shape has a reason. The asymmetric design allows for flexible installation and quick assembly.

The half-round profile creates space for cables, while the flat base keeps a power strip securely in place. It can be angled to either side for easy access, and even the mounting holes are carefully positioned to avoid brackets and fittings. Good design doesn't stop at the desktop. Sometimes, you have to look underneath.

What makes a material choice truly sustainable?

When it comes to sustainability, the answer is rarely straightforward. Materials need to be evaluated from multiple perspectives – from climate impact and chemical content to circularity and the ability to repair or update a product over time. Since a large share of a furniture product’s climate impact occurs during material production, longevity becomes an important part of the equation.

Different materials offer different strengths, and the right choice for one environment may not be the right choice for another. Wood often has a lower carbon footprint than metal and plastic and can be refreshed over time through sanding or refinishing, while metal offers high strength and excellent recyclability.
