𝗗𝗶𝗿𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀? Here’s a simple guide to clean your leather or fabric couches!

𝗟𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿
1. Vacuum to remove any dirt, dust, crumbs, or loose particles
2. Make a cleaning solution by mixing a bowl of warm water and dish soap, OR mix an equal amount of water and white vinegar
3. Dip a clean microfiber cloth into the solution, make sure it is damp and not soaking
4. Rub the dirty areas of the leather in a circular motion
5. Wipe off any excess damp areas with a clean, dry microfiber cloth
6. Apply leather cream/conditioner to restore moisture and suppleness

𝗙𝗮𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗰
1. Use a firm-bristled brush to loosen stains on the surface
2. Vacuum to remove any dirt, dust, crumbs, or loose particles
3. Check for manufacturer’s cleaning instructions (found on sofa tags)
• 𝗪 - Water-based cleaning (either steam-clean or remove the stain using water, white distilled vinegar, and dish soap)
• 𝗦 - Solvent-based cleaning (dry clean only, sprinkle baking soda across the sofa, and leave for 15 to 20 minutes before vacuuming them up)
• 𝗪𝗦 - Water or solvent-based cleaning
• 𝗫 - Vacuuming or light brushing only
4. Spot treat stubborn stains with a recommended cleaning solution such as upholstery shampoo, mild detergent, or mild dry cleaning solvent
5. Dry your couch by patting down any wet areas with a clean, soft towel to gently blot and soak up the residual moisture
6. Allow the couch to air dry completely

𝟭. 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗹 - The most obvious way to find out. If it is real leather, you will probably see tags that say ‘100% real leather’, ‘full/top grain leather’, or ‘genuine leather’. If you see words like ‘synthetic’ or ‘man-made material’, that means the product is not made from real leather.

𝟮. 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘂𝗽 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 - Check the surface of the leather. Real leather is a natural material made from real animal skin, thus you should be able to spot visible pores, blemishes and imperfections. The surface of fake leather is likely to be more uniform with a regular, textured pattern.

𝟯. 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝘁 - Real leather has an uneven, grainy feel when you run your finger across the surface. It also stretches, wrinkles, and creases like skin when you press your finger into the leather. In contrast, fake leather feels cold and unnaturally smooth, almost like plastic. When pressed, it simply depressed under your finger while still retaining its shape.

𝟰. 𝗦𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝘁 - Real leather has a distinct, oaky smell while fake leather smells like chemicals and plastic.
