NEW ARRIVALS: Antique Black Chest from Shanxi

An antique chest from Shanxi in black, in very original condition. The colourful paintings on the front are faded but visible: chrysanthemum, peonies, lotus, a peach and a gourd. L87 x W55 x H58cm.

These are all traditional auspicious symbols. The chrysanthemum and peach stand for longevity, the peony for wealth and honour, and the lotus for purity and harmony. The gourd (葫芦, hú lu) sounds like 福禄 (fú lù), meaning blessings and prosperity.

Along the base, a painted band of the Buddhist wàn symbol (卍) repeats in a continuous pattern, a symbol of eternity. It sits between a stepped moulding and a plain plinth below.

NEW ARRIVALS: Antique Large Bookshelf from Shanxi

An antique large bookshelf from Shanxi, made of elm, and a true statement piece. It has slightly rounded members and a beautiful original wood patina and colour.

The four drawers below have their original teardrop handles, larger than the standard size, which is a nice detail. Bookshelves like this are a rare find. L160 x D40 x H188cm.

NEW ARRIVALS IN STORE NOW

Our new shipment has finally arrived!

Featured in today's sneak peek is a stunning antique carved table from Shanxi, with beautiful carvings, original patina and simple hardware. L118 x D40 x H86cm.

In front is a vintage Shanxi painted box showing a boy riding a goose, a traditional motif wishing for a happy marriage and a flourishing family. The goose stands for lifelong devotion, and the boy for family continuity and prosperity.

On the left are rustic Shanxi stools in various sizes. On the table are small vintage leather boxes, and we have many large ones in this time too. The stacks of square lacquer trays on the table and the box are new arrivals as well.

There's lots more to see in store. We look forward to your visit soon!

Vintage 4-Door Cabinet from Zhejiang & Hand-Painted Screen.

A vintage 4-door cabinet from Zhejiang, simple in design and refinished in a distressed grey green. The beautiful, subtle beading and detailing around the door frames is all the decoration it needs. L110 x D40 x H100cm.

The four doors open as two bi-fold pairs.

Behind it is a new 4-panel gold leaf screen with hand-painted bamboo. Each panel is 50cm wide and 200cm tall.

Antique Buddha's Altar Table from Shanxi.

An antique Buddha's altar table from Shanxi. The front is finished in a dark reddish black, and the tabletop is in red lacquer. The drawer has its original brass handle, and below it is a sizable secret compartment. Beneath the compartment is a finely carved through skirting with fruits, leaves and curling scrolls. W54.5 x D49.5 x H85cm.

On the table, a white ceramic Guanyin in a relaxed pose sits on a rustic wood block. Guanyin in this pose is known as 自在观音 (zì zài guān yīn), "Guanyin at ease". The statue is 55cm tall.

Antique Red Lacquered Cabinet from Shanxi.

An antique cabinet from Shanxi in a deep red lacquer, painted with a landscape of mountains and pavilions. With age, the painting has settled into a subdued dark tone.

Cabinets like this are usually quite large. At 130cm tall, this one is a medium size, which is unusual. Together with the deep red and the muted painting, it makes a statement without being over the top. W101 x D49 x H130cm.

A Corner of Our Showroom: Chaozhou & Fujian Door Panels, Table Lamps.

Door panels take centre stage in this corner.

In the background is a dramatic pair of black and gold door panels from Chaozhou. The openwork carving at the top has two layers: flowers, vases and curio stands in front, set against a latticework background. The gilding lifts the carving out from the black.

On the left is a pair of simpler door panels from Fujian, with carvings at the top and plain vertical rails below.

Completing the scene are a book chest, a vintage bench, a birdcage and table lamps, showing the range that we carry.

A Corner of Our Showroom: Painter's Table, Canopy Painting & Leather Chest

A corner of the showroom this week, with a few favourites together.

On the right is a weathered elm painter's table in a natural wood finish. It has cloud spandrels, and a humpback stretcher that sits tight against the underside of the tabletop. L211 x W63 x H82cm.

Above it hangs a canopy painting with the theme 五子登科 (wǔ zǐ dēng kē), "five sons passing the imperial exams". It is a wish for children to do well in their studies and careers. L180 x H123cm.

Below the table are two small chests from Shanxi, in a nice warm brown. Their petite size is unusual and versatile, at 50cm and 57cm tall.

On the left is a red leather chest with beautiful original deep red colour. It is in good condition, so we've kept it as it is, and its brass hardware is original too. L86 x W56 x H41cm. On top sits the Tibetan Buddhist Kalachakra painting, W62.5 x H83.5cm.

Vintage Table with Rattan Top from Dongyang, Zhejiang.

A vintage 2-drawer table from Dongyang city, Zhejiang province, in a dark reddish black colour, with a rattan top. L125 x D38 x H90cm.

Openwork ruyi cloud carvings frame the drawers and both ends. The flowing, spiralled pattern symbolises smooth fortune and wishes fulfilled, which is the meaning of 如意 (rúyì), "as you wish".

The rounded legs and rounded members, together with the splayed stance, give the table a lightness and elegance.

The two large drawers on top have scalloped borders with a recessed centre. Each has a long brass pull that can be latched onto the middle k**b and locked.

On both sides, the relief carvings are beautifully done. They show the Chi Dragon (螭龙, chī lóng), a hornless dragon, in swirling curls that run almost the full height of the legs.

The fixed panels below the drawers hide a secret compartment, and it's quite large on this piece.

The green pots around the cabinet are antique ceramic w**e pots from Hunan.
