Today Kings Bay = Queens Bay💘

On this International Women’s Day, we want to celebrate the women working together on the edge of the world here in Ny- Ålesund.

We are incredibly proud of the share of women that have chosen to come here to Ny- Ålesund, from the service and technical deptartment, to the Kings Bay Administration - consisting of mostly women, led by our director, Hege Walør Fagertun.

We 🤍 Polar Bears

There’s still not been observed a bear near Ny- Ålesund this year, but that does not mean they are not in the area!

Kongsfjorden is very popular for polar bears particularly in summer because there’s so much to eat for them when the migrating birds have arrived 🍳🐻‍❄️

One of our larger buildings called Evenstad has been moved back and forth this winter due to the need for refoundation of the piles it stands on. This has been an incredible process led by our Technical department with a team of 5-7 people - sometimes working in extremely challenging conditions.

36 new piles was drilled 9 meters into the ground to support this massive building, so it can keep upright and is safe to live in for the future.

Thawing of permafrost ground poses huge challenges for infrastructure in the Arctic. Our buildings are constructed on piles (stilts) to lift them off the ground to reduce thawing of the ground from the buildings themselves. Even so, over time as the Arctic is warming rapidly, the permafrost in the ground is weakening and foundational piles shift and move in the ground, causing unstable fundaments that needs to be replaced.

I et forrykende vær med kuling fra øst jobbes det i Kings Bay med refundamentering av «Evenstad».

Bygget er 46 meter langt og 9 meter bredt og i to etasjer. Selve flyttingen tok ca 4 timer. Men hele prosessen med planlegging, refundamentering og etterarbeid tar ca en måned. Hele prosessen ivaretas av 5-7 personer. Det skal nå borres 36 hull til nye fundamenter, ned til 9 meters dybde. Underveis er alt av rør og elektro koplet om og det stables og flyttes om på ca 400 kubber som støtter opp bygget mens det er på flyttefot. I februar er huset tilbake på sin gamle tomt. Og i andre etasje bor folk mens huset er på flyttefot.

En helt fantastisk jobb, fra et helt ekstraordinært mannskap. Med unik kompetanse bygd opp over år, lar dette seg fint gjøre på 79 grader nord.

Hvordan kan Kings Bay bli en bedre tilrettelegger for polarforskning i Ny-Ålesund?

Dette var hovedtemaet da Kings Bay AS møtte Universitetet i Bergen (UiB) i forrige uke.

Vi hadde et svært konstruktivt møte med dekan Mangerud ved Fakultet for naturvitenskap og teknologi. Her fikk vi innsikt i UiBs ambisjoner for polarforskning fremover, og ikke minst verdifulle innspill til hvordan Kings Bay kan tilrettelegge for at Ny-Ålesund blir en enda mer attraktiv arena for norske forskningsmiljøer.

Både styreleder Instanes og direktør Walør Fagertun setter stor pris på dialogen. For Kings Bay er det avgjørende å lytte til behovene fra forskningsmiljøene for å kunne tilby riktig infrastruktur og støtte.

How can Kings Bay become a better facilitator for polar research in Ny-Ålesund?

This was the main topic when Kings Bay AS met with the University of Bergen (UiB) last week.

We had a very constructive meeting with Dean Gunn Mangerud at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology. During the meeting, we gained insight into UiB’s ambitions for future polar research and, most importantly, received valuable input on how Kings Bay can help make Ny-Ålesund an even more attractive arena for Norwegian research communities.

Both Chairman of the Board Tor Instanes and CEO Hege Walør Fagertun greatly appreciate this dialogue. For Kings Bay, it is crucial to listen to the needs of the research communities in order to provide the right infrastructure and support.

Fra 79 grader nord til Bergen for å lære!

Marinlaboratoriet i Ny-Ålesund er verdens nordligste i sitt slag. Her tilbyr vi forskere fra hele verden tilgang på unike fasiliteter med sjøvann hentet rett fra havdypet utenfor. Men skal vi være best på infrastruktur, må vi også hente inspirasjon utenfra.

Derfor tok vi turen til Bergen forrige uke.

Hege (direktør) og Tor (styreleder) besøkte Stiftelsen Industrilaboratoriet (ILAB) på Marineholmen. De har hele 30 års erfaring med å drifte avanserte laboratorier for havbruk og fiskehelse.

Det ble et utrolig lærerikt besøk med gode diskusjoner om drift og tekniske løsninger sammen med Reidar og Linda fra ILAB. Vi gleder oss til å bruke erfaringene til å gjøre tilbudet i Ny-Ålesund enda bedre!

From 79 Degrees North to Bergen to Learn!

The marine laboratory in Ny-Ålesund is the northernmost of its kind in the world. Here, we offer researchers from all over the globe access to unique facilities with seawater drawn directly from the ocean depths nearby. But to be the best in infrastructure, we also need to seek inspiration from outside.

That’s why we traveled to Bergen last week.

Hege (Director) and Tor (Chairman of the Board) visited the Industrial Laboratory Foundation (ILAB) at Marineholmen. They have 30 years of experience operating advanced laboratories for aquaculture and fish health.

It was an incredibly educational visit with great discussions about operations and technical solutions together with Reidar and Linda from ILAB. We look forward to using these insights to make the offerings in Ny-Ålesund even better!
