How can international commitments on biodiversity translate into tangible progress for countries? And how can science, knowledge and technology help turn this ambition into reality?

These questions were at the heart of a side event organized by the Sahara and Sahel Observatory and the Humboldt Institute on 28 October 2026 in Yerevan, bringing together representatives from Africa and Latin America on the sidelines of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17).

As the Regional Support Centre for Technical and Scientific Cooperation for North Africa and the Sahel, the OSS is committed to playing its full role in bridging countries’ needs with the expertise, tools and partnerships that can address them.

In his address, Mr. Nabil Ben Khatra, Executive Secretary of the OSS, highlighted a key point: national reports only fulfil their purpose when they inform decision-making and help drive action forward. This requires strong institutions, sustained capacity development and better access to knowledge.

Drawing on experiences from Tunisia, Libya, Colombia and Uruguay, this meeting, dedicated to the Nagoya and Cartagena Protocols, showcased the value of South-South cooperation based on sharing knowledge and solutions.

Because protecting biodiversity is a shared responsibility, while effective responses must also be shaped by the realities and needs of each country.
