On International Women’s Day, it is worth remembering that the history of light is not only a story of technology, but also of the women who helped illuminate it.
In the late 19th century, British scientist Hertha Marks Ayrton conducted pioneering research on the electric arc; the technology behind the first generation of electric street lighting. Her work explained why arc lamps flickered and hissed and helped stabilize electric illumination at a time when cities were transitioning from gaslight to electricity.
Decades later, physicist Maria Goeppert Mayer deepened our understanding of light at the quantum level, laying the theoretical groundwork for modern photonics and laser technologies.
Today’s energy-efficient lighting also owes much to scientists working on semiconductor physics and LED technologies. Among them is materials scientist Shuji Nakamura’s collaborator Nadya Mason, whose research on quantum materials contributes to next-generation optical and electronic systems.
The story of light is also a story of persistence of women who entered fields where they were rarely expected and whose work continues to shape how we illuminate our cities, architecture, and everyday life.
On this International Women’s Day, remembering these pioneers is also a reminder that advancing knowledge often begins with those willing to step forward and lead; sometimes quietly, but always as true vanguards. ✨

HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR. The Chinese Lunar Year starts by 17th February. This is also a time when Light becomes meaning:
Celebrated on the 15th day of the first lunar month, the Chinese Lantern Festival marks the first full moon of the year; and the closing moment of the Lunar New Year cycle.
With origins tracing back over 2,000 years to the Han Dynasty, the festival evolved through imperial rituals, early Buddhist influences, and public celebrations into a collective act of illumination.
But beyond tradition, this is a festival about light as language.
Lanterns, especially glowing in deep reds, carry layered meanings:
🏮 Light as guidance
🏮Light as protection
🏮Light as a signal of renewal
Their round forms echo unity and continuity, while their presence in the night transforms space into something shared, almost architectural.
In this sense, the Lantern Festival is not only a cultural event;
it is an early, powerful demonstration of how light constructs atmosphere, emotion, and connection.
A reminder for us:
Light is never only functional.
It is always conceptual.
