The camps are closed for the big rains, though it is not raining that much this year in Nyerere, and every body is on leave.
So here an interesting story… Our friend and guest Marcus Rutherford was with us in February and with Ali and Zac explored the British/German battleground at Beho Beho where Frederick Selous (after whom the reserve was originally named) was killed by a sniper in January 1917. Ali’s sharp eyes spotted an ancient Ma**er 7.92mm bullet casing which subsequent research has confirmed was manufactured in 1915, so it was certainly a relic of the battle. Marcus is a fantastic painter as well as a great historian (look out for his book “The Real Henry Morton Stanley” due to be published by www.penandswordbooks.com later this year) and he was able to explain to us how 4,000 Nigerians with many soldiers from the Indian subcontinent fought alongside British troops against the Germans and local askaris, who, despite being vastly outnumbered, put up a brave fight. For our guests it was an incredibly moving experience to be able to watch wild dogs and carmine bee-eaters hunting over the territory once fought over by warriors! With the rains all herbivores are very happy! Note in Nyerere we have the Niassa wildebeest subspecies (Connochaetes taurinus johnstoni) lighter in color, bigger and prettier than the Serengeti subspecies (Connochaetes taurinus mearnsi)

Four dogs started to chase some impala and the rest of the pack followed behind, but soon stopped as the chase went fruitless..
