Properly locate a generator outdoors, at least 20 feet away from windows, doors, and vents to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Standby units should be 1.5 to 5 feet from structures and on a level, stable concrete pad. Ensure 36 inches of clearance around the generator for maintenance, keeping it away from vegetation.

Key Safety and Installation Guidelines

Carbon Monoxide Danger: Never use a generator in a garage, shed, or near partially enclosed areas, even if doors are open. Fumes can easily enter the home.
Optimal Placement: Position the unit as close as safely possible to both the electrical meter and the gas meter (or propane tank).

Clearance Requirements: Maintain at least 5 feet of space from windows, doors, and other wall openings to prevent fumes from entering.

Fire Safety: Keep the unit at least 1.5 feet away from walls and remove nearby vegetation (shrubs, trees) that is taller than 12 inches.

Ground Conditions: The generator should sit on a solid, level, and elevated foundation (like a concrete pad or gravel bed) to prevent flooding and ensure stable operation.

Exhaust Direction: Always point the exhaust pipe away from the house, neighbors, and any air intake vents.
Additional Tips

Noise Management: Place the unit away from neighbor's bedrooms to minimize noise disturbance.

Fuel Access: The location must allow for easy, safe connection to fuel sources.

Elevation: In flood-prone areas, elevate the generator on a specially designed platform to avoid damage.
