Raising expectations.

People have been asking the same question about gas fireplaces for as long as we’ve been building them. How real can you actually make it look?

In 2022, the Nordik 34 insert was our answer. Everything we had learned about fire, flame, and hand-painted logs went into it, and when it hit the floor, it changed what people expected a gas insert to look like. Not a good imitation of a wood fire. A fire.

The best part is where it came from. Dudley started making our own logs in 1994 because he wasn't satisfied with what he could buy. Thirty years of that same stubbornness is what the Nordik 34 is built on.

Pretty realistic? We’ll let you be the judge. Take a look and tell us what you think.

Ahead of the Standard

Years before anyone required it, Kozy Heat was building fireplaces with operable screen doors. That was a design decision. We wanted a fireplace you could stand close to that still looked like a piece of furniture in your living room.

Here's the thing about a gas fireplace. The glass gets hot enough to burn, and for years, kids, pets, and plenty of grown adults were finding that out the hard way. So in 2015, the hearth industry required a protective barrier on every gas fireplace. It was the right call, and it made a real difference in many homes.

A barrier is easy to add and hard to make beautiful. We could have attached a screen to the fireplaces we were already building and called it finished. Instead we went back and redesigned the line so the barrier looked like it belonged there, part of the fireplace instead of something tacked on at the end. We were one of the few manufacturers who took that route.

Safer, and still something you want to look at every day. That's the whole idea.

These are some of those models, including the Minnetonka (shown) and the Princeton with the operable doors that started it all.

A bigger facility for a bigger future.

That’s Dudley and Jim with the shovel in 1995, breaking ground on our move to the Industrial Park here in Lakefield.

Kozy Heat started in a mill shop. From there, we moved to a building on Main Street, and it wasn’t long before we outgrew that, too. By 1995, we needed real room, and a move like this one meant betting on growth that hadn’t happened yet. They put the shovel in the ground anyway.

That same address is still home. After a handful of additions, our manufacturing facility is now more than 200,000 square feet, and we still have room to grow.

Not bad for a company that started with one man, a barrel stove, and a hand-painted sign.

Raising the bar from the inside out.

That's Dudley in 1977, tinkering away in our first R&D lab. He was always like that. If he thought something could work better, he wanted to take it apart and find out how.

That's the same mindset that led to 1994. Dudley wanted a gas fire that really looked like a wood fire, and he figured the only way to get there was to stop buying logs and start making our own. There was no recipe book for it. It took a lot of trial and error on the shop floor, one batch at a time, before the logs looked the way he had pictured them.

He got it started. Our team is what made it work, and they're the reason it still works today. Thirty years later, we're building logs from scratch in-house, and every single one is hand-painted by our log artists. That's a skill you can't rush, and you can't automate. We're one of only a handful of companies in the world doing it.

Next time you're in front of one of our fires, take a close look at the logs. Someone here painted those by hand.

October is National Fireplace Month. We're celebrating every kind of fire.

Some nights call for real flame. The Generation Series brings the depth, the glow, a full view, and the heat that only gas can deliver.

Some spaces call for something different. The Osseo X Series brings that same warmth anywhere you want it. No venting. Fewer limits. Just plug in and gather.

Gas or electric, it's never really about the fuel. It's about the room everyone ends up in. The conversation that runs late. The quiet morning with coffee.

Every fireplace earns a place in the home. Here's to all of them. 🔥

Which one is lighting up your home this fall?

No big booth. No carpet. No spinning overhead sign. Just a hand-painted sign, a couple of stoves, and a phone number that rang straight to Lakefield.

That's Dudley, with the curly hair, at an early trade show, with his late wife in the background. See the big black barrels behind the sign? That's the barrel stove, one of the first stoves he ever built. It's the stove that got Kozy Heat started.

Back then, growing a business meant loading up the stoves in his truck, driving to shows like this one, and talking with people one at a time. That's how Dudley built our first dealer network across Minnesota, one conversation and one handshake after another. He was dreaming big long before anyone knew the name. (And if you look closely, there's already a "Sold" sign on the stove up front.)

Our booths look a lot different these days, but walking into a trade show still feels the same. It feels like a family reunion. We get to catch up with dealers who've been with us since the very beginning and welcome the ones who just joined the family. Dudley started that, and it's the part we'll never change.

Dealers, how many shows have we done together? Tell us in the comments.

This is the photo we always come back to. One shop, one Chevy Blazer as collateral, and a young man who turned down the big city to stay in a town most people have never heard of.

His name is Dudley Hussong, and if you've ever stood in front of a Kozy Heat, you know him whether you've met him or not.

Before any of this, Dudley had a good job doing what we'd call ergonomic engineering today. He ran time studies and figured out how people and machines could work together better. He was good enough at it that they wanted him in the Minneapolis area, running the big factories. It was the kind of offer you're supposed to say yes to.

He said no thanks. He's a rural guy. He wanted a small town, a short drive home, and a place where the pace of life made sense to him, his wife, and his young son. That was the whole decision. So he came back to Lakefield and went to work at his dad's mill shop.

Then the fuel embargo came, and that shop got cold. In 1976, he built a wood barrel stove to heat it. There was no plan past that. He was cold, and he knew how to build things. But somebody felt that heat and asked if he could make one for their house. Then somebody else did. One fireplace became two. Two became a line. And fifty years later, on winter nights all over this country, families are pulling their chairs a little closer to something that started as one man trying to warm up a shop in Lakefield, Minnesota.

That's the whole thing, really. It has always been about keeping people warm. It just got bigger.

Fifty years from that shop to your living room. Thanks for sitting by the fire with us.
