Google’s advertising slowdown is part of a broader trend, as advertisers cut budgets amid recession fears and a sea of uncertainty. According to Standard Media Index’s September 2022 Core Data report, ad spending in the U.S. dropped by 5 percent in September, continuing a four-month decline. Total ad spending across all media was down 6 percent in the third quarter, as both digital and television ad spending growth evaporated over the first nine months of the year.

With recession fears looming large over the U.S. economy, advertising businesses should batten down the hatches, as ad spending has historically declined disproportionately amid economic downturns.

What's Better K-Cups or a full Pot of Coffee?
For a lot of people, Coffee is a necessity. And we really do mean it when we say “most”. Surveys indicate that 64% of Americans drink at least one cup of coffee every day. That’s a lot of coffee drinkers!

Fun Coffee Facts

Recession, just a Technicality? How is the economy affecting your business?
Rising prices are hammering down on the American public and could depress consumer spending more, potentially dragging down another indicator.

While the economy is not in its direst straights, the outlook certainly isn’t great either and even the mention of a (technical) recession might be enough to tip the scales with timid businesses and consumers.

As the combination of inflation and recession is leaving administrators at a loss whether they should stimulate or depress the economy, the global supply shocks of the Ukraine-Russia war that are behind the unusual patterns might ultimately be what prolongs or ends the current crisis.

The US economy is in an unusual state, and keeping track of the latest data isn't easy, so here are 4 key trends we're watching:

Mortgage rates: The average 30-year fixed rate hit 5.3% last week (climbing higher still this week), the highest since 2009. Higher borrowing costs could cool the US housing market — where typical prices have jumped 15% in the last year.

Millions of quitters: More Americans are saying "I quit" than ever before, with a record 4.5 million Americans leaving their jobs in March.

Unemployment: With a record 11.5 million jobs open, Americans looking for work are generally finding it — with the unemployment rate hovering near a record low of 3.6%.

Inflation: Monetary stimulus from the pandemic, supply chain shortages and the growing energy crisis have all contributed to inflation hitting 8.5% year-on-year.

Small Business Tip : Solve a burning problem!
An important business tip for new entrepreneurs is to create a business that solves a problem. If you asked most failed business owners what problem they solved, they either can’t answer or the problem they solved wasn’t urgent enough.

The problem you solve doesn’t need to be complicated like curing a disease. It can be simple, such as we help people overcome boredom by providing an entertaining experience. But ultimately, you need to know what you’re trying to accomplish with your business. By knowing what burning problem you’re solving, you can use that in your marketing to help people understand how you can help them best.

Stay or go? Is switching jobs a winning Strategy for you?
If you're one of the 40% of Americans that are considering quitting their jobs at the moment, the data suggests it might be worth taking the plunge — analysis from the Atlanta Fed shows a widening pay-gap between the have-quits and the have-nots.

Small Business Tip #22: Build a Business Plan For Success
If you do not currently have a business plan, you need to write one. Writing out a business plan forces you to think through various aspects of your business, such as your products and services, your target customers (more on that later), your competition, and your marketing plan.

A business plan also helps you formulate revenue projections and set goals for your company. Take the time to think through all of these aspects and create goals. If you have an existing business plan, it's time to dust it off and update it with new goals and projections.

Small Business Tip: Get it in Writing!
Always get it in writing. Verbal contracts are very hard to enforce and are only valid in certain situations. While contract laws vary by state, common provisions indicate that certain types of contracts are only legally enforceable in written form. This typically includes contracts for any sale of more than $500, those intended to last longer than a year and any transfer of real estate or intellectual property.

Since 1985, Costco has sold a hot dog (a big one!) and a soda for just $1.50. We praise the company for never changing it, a strategy that the wholesale store is able to keep up because shoppers who come for the great hot dog deal tend to spend even more in the store.
