A question we get constantly from designers and builders: who's responsible for field measurements?
We are. We price the job off the architectural set, but once the contract is signed and we start shop drawings, our design team measures the framing directly. From that point the blueprint is a guide and the house is the mandate — whatever is physically standing is what our drawings follow.
The builders we work with frame within about an inch, and some hold closer to a quarter. When we find a discrepancy we bring it to the builder and he decides whether to correct it. If it stays, we scribe to it — the filler is cut to follow the true line of the wall, so there's no gap waiting to be filled with caulk.
All of this is better solved earlier. Bring us in before anything is framed and we can read the architect's plan and catch what won't work. A designer wants a floating vanity the architect never drew — the P-traps have to move up to clear the gap under the cabinet. Caught then, it's a conversation. Caught after framing, it's a change order.

Who’s Responsible for Field Measurements — and When?
We measure. The blueprint is a guide, the house is the mandate. What governs shop drawings, what happens when framing is off, and when to call before you frame.

People ask what a normal deposit looks like on custom cabinetry. Here's ours — and what each payment actually buys.
We work on 50/40/10. Fifty percent when the contract is signed — that pays for your materials and your shop drawings, so everything is bought and drawn before we start manufacturing. Forty percent 72 hours before delivery, which covers the manufacturing labor and the beginning of the installation. Ten percent once every item on the punch list is closed. That final payment is where we earn on the job, which means we don't get paid what we've made until your kitchen is finished properly.
Then there's the part nobody tells you: after we install, the countertop company needs a few weeks, and the appliances land after that. It's usually four to six weeks from the end of our installation to the final walk-through, when we fit the handles and the appliance panels and make the last adjustments. That's when the last check is written.
If a shop tells you it can start your house next week, that's information. A good shop here has work. We run eight to fourteen weeks from drawing approval.

A bathroom should be more than functional. It should feel intentional, refined, and built around the way you live. Custom cabinetry brings together thoughtful design, quality craftsmanship, and a finish made specifically for your space.

If you're about to put a deposit on custom cabinets, here's a question worth asking first: where does that money sit while the shop draws your job?
At Sunshine Alliance, the contract comes first — it binds us to you and you to us. The deposit then goes into a separate account, not our operations account, and it waits there. We don't order a sheet of material until you've signed off on the shop drawings. Once you do, everything is purchased on a PO tied to your job, so every piece is tracked and identified to your name.
We've been building since 2002, through more than one downturn and through the COVID shutdown. We've never handed a job off and we've never stopped a project halfway through.
The part people underestimate is how easily a small operation disappears. Two thousand square feet, a few people, financed equipment — that shop can close on a Friday and reopen under a different name. Our machinery is paid off in full. It doesn't move overnight, and neither do we.
So walk the floor before you sign. Then ask for references on a job the size of yours.
