Here’s a little story behind my latest piece—every detail has its own chapter. While crafting this wood vase from flame boxelder, the subtler tones of red and blue that emerged were a delightful surprise. It's not as bold as some of the others but carries a refined elegance that I fell in love with instantly. A piece like this is quite a challenge too, hollowing out the entire inside through such a narrow opening, all by hand.
I often find myself wondering about the stories these pieces could tell if they could speak. Where would they fit best? In a cozy reading nook, a vibrant office, or perhaps as the centerpiece on a dining table? What do you think, fellow designers and decor enthusiasts? How would you integrate this piece into a space? I’d love to hear your thoughts and see your designs!

The Process: From Tree Removal to Furniture Creation
In Boston, the journey of transforming a removed tree into a stunning piece of custom furniture is a blend of artistry, skill, and environmental consciousness. It begins with identifying trees that are being removed, often due to safety concerns or urban development. Rather than being discarded, these trees find a new purpose. The Fern and Tree, a local pioneer in the tree to table movement, steps in to give these trees a second life.
In the workshop, the wood is milled, a process that converts the raw tree trunks into workable slabs. This milling process is crucial as it reveals the unique patterns, grains, and character of the wood, each piece telling a story of its origins. These slabs are then dried, often for several months, to ensure stability and prevent warping.
The design phase is where the magic happens. The Fern and Tree collaborate with clients to create a vision for the furniture. Each piece is designed with the client's needs and the wood's unique characteristics in mind, ensuring that the final product is not only functional but also a work of art.
Finally, the creation of the furniture begins. This is where craftsmanship truly shines. A combination of traditional woodworking techniques and modern technology are used to shape, assemble, and finish the furniture. The result is a bespoke piece that not only serves a practical purpose but also carries with it the history and soul of the tree it once was.
This process is not just about making furniture; it's about preserving a piece of nature's beauty and creating something that can be cherished for generations. It's a testament to Boston's commitment to sustainability and creativity, where every removed tree gets a chance to add beauty and functionality to someone's home.
