Carefully scraping the surface of a rustic country farmhouse table. This piece was crafted several years back and remains in daily use within a professional setting.
We documented the entire process in a video, which can be viewed here:

About the Editor:
Richard Oedel has been making things his entire life. Maker, writer, and mentor, he has experienced the furniture making life “up close and personal.” For the past two decades, he has made furniture for clients from Boston to Qatar, and he continues to share his knowledge with others at every opportunity. This book is his opportunity to share that life and those friends he has made along the path with others who normally see it only in the finely crafted work they create.
About the book:
Joined Together: 30 Years of the Furniture Masters is published in conjunction with the exhibition of these masters’ work at the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, NH. A view into the world of making and designing beautiful objects, it is also a window into the daily lives of the Furniture Masters.
In 1994, New Hampshire had a core of exceptionally talented furniture makers who were not well known outside the small world of studio furniture. The state also had a few business and community leaders who wanted to change that dynamic. Their mission: preserving and perpetuating the centuries-long tradition of fine furniture making in the region.
Over the next 30 years, this rugged band of Furniture Masters created one of the most cohesive groups of educators, makers, and writers in the nation, passing along their knowledge, passion, and expertise to others. Instrumental in the growth of other related organizations, they raised the standards for making furniture and educating others, all while making their own work and writing about it so that others could learn. Founding three separate prison system education programs and spreading their teaching around the world, they are at the forefront of preserving the skills and stretching the boundaries of furniture making. This is their story.

At the Castle in the Clouds yesterday with a few of my fellow Furniture Masters, talking furniture, how the Plants, who built the house, commissioned furniture for their 5000 acre estate in Moultonboro NH, and all the while Michelle Hallee was demonstrating how to inlay a compass rose. A good day, in spite of the rain!
