Not all walnut is created equal, and these slabs are a perfect example. 🌳

This set of Black Walnut slabs has some of the most unusual coloring we’ve seen. Along with the rich browns and purples you expect from walnut, these pieces have heavy gray and smoky streaking running through the grain, giving them a completely different character from typical walnut.

So what causes all that variation?

Walnut gets its color from natural compounds that develop as the tree forms heartwood, but the final appearance can be influenced by several things, including the tree’s genetics, age, growing conditions, soil and mineral content, moisture history, and even how the wood dries and oxidizes after it’s cut. That’s why two walnut trees growing in the same area can produce lumber that looks completely different.

We can’t say exactly what created every gray streak in these particular slabs, but that natural variation is exactly what makes them special. You’re looking at something that can’t simply be duplicated or manufactured.

Imagine one of these as a dining table, conference table, bar top, or statement piece. 👀

Available now at Dry Creek Lumber in Bourbon, Missouri.

Pin Oak doesn’t always get the attention it deserves… but maybe it should.

This custom dining table is crafted from solid Pin Oak, a species that’s often overlooked in favor of white oak or red oak. But Pin Oak has a lot going for it. It grows faster, reaches impressive sizes, and produces beautiful grain that really comes alive with the right finish.

For this piece, we finished the top with Rubio Monocoat in Ash Gray, adding subtle depth while allowing the natural character of the wood to remain the star of the show. The modern sculptural base from Flowyline Design creates the perfect contrast between warm natural wood and clean contemporary steel.

Sometimes the most beautiful furniture starts with a species that people simply haven’t taken the time to appreciate.

What do you think, would you have guessed this was Pin Oak?
