The USS Constitution visited Bremerton July 1933. Ooooh, 100 year Anniversary is coming up. Thanks for the News Puget Sound Navy Museum.

Happy birthday, USS Constitution! On October 21, 1797, the frigate Constitution launched in Boston. Nicknamed “Old Ironsides,” USS Constitution is now the oldest commissioned ship in the U.S. Navy. She has been a museum ship since 1907.

This photo from the PSNM artifact collection was taken during her visit to Bremerton in July 1933. At the time, USS Constitution had recently undergone an extensive restoration, and she went on a national tour to thank the country for donating to the restoration effort.

When New York finally united its five boroughs, it needed a building big enough to run them all, and in 1914 it got one. 🏛️

The Manhattan Municipal Building rose at Centre and Chambers Streets after the 1898 consolidation of Greater New York created a sudden flood of new city offices and paperwork. The firm of McKim, Mead & White won the commission, with William M. Kendall leading the design. The result was a 40 story tower of granite and terracotta with a sweeping colonnade at its base and a grand arch that once let traffic pass straight through the building. Below it, the design even made room for a subway station, tying the city's government directly to its new underground trains. 🚇

At the very top stands Civic Fame, a gilded copper figure by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman, lifting a crown high above lower Manhattan. More than a century later, the building still houses city offices, and generations of couples have walked out of the City Clerk's office nearby with a marriage license in hand. Its tiered, layered crown went on to influence tower designs far beyond New York. ✨🗽

Have you ever stood beneath that colonnade and looked straight up, and what did you notice first?
