Solo 76 and Sensory 76 are making their EDspaces debut at Booth 2411, where we're also hosting an old school arcade game rivalry, and a book signing with Amanda Schneider.

Then take a breather in the Nook Neighborhood at the top of the escalators, catch the Kay-Twelve Better Learning Podcast recording in a Nook next to the registration desk, and look for Nooks in the AIA CAE Classroom.

Libraries serve people with different needs, often in the same room. More choice in where to sit helps make space for that.

Having a say in where they sit or when they need a quieter spot can help students feel safe, stay connected, and reduce overstimulation. Giving students a sense of agency over how they engage with their surroundings is a core tenet of trauma-informed classroom design.

Before asking a student to focus, we should ask what their environment is asking them to filter out.

Research with autistic children found greater attention when children controlled the sensory equipment themselves. That points to a meaningful design principle: give students a say in their sensory surroundings.

The hum of the lights. Footsteps between the shelves. A chair scraping across the floor. Our brains are constantly sorting through sensory information, and for some people, those small details can become overwhelming.

A trip to the library should leave room for getting lost in a story, without feeling overwhelmed by everything happening around it.

What if having somewhere to pause was simply part of being out in public? In every library. Every museum. Every school.

That’s why sensory spaces matter. A place to take a little time, let things settle and stay part of the places we came to enjoy.

We want more students to feel this way at school. Still included, still connected, just a little less overwhelmed.

Getting through a school day can take a lot, particularly for students who find busy classrooms difficult. Having somewhere to settle, with teachers and friends nearby, can make being there feel more manageable.
