Texas Native Species
White Oak - East Texas - Lufkin
Walnut - East Texas - Nacogdoches
Sycamore - Central & East - Bellville
Pecan - Central & East - Bastrop
Loblolly Pine - Bastrop to Sabine
Juniper Cedar - Central Texas - Bryan
Each have their own specific quarks and uses. All "can" be made into furniture however, cedar is terrible, pine is ok, but pecan would be one of my favs. Pound for pound, pecan is a sleeper - not as expensive as walnut or white oak but just a hard with variation in color and grain that makes it super interesting. White oak and walnut are classics...for good reason.
Ones that I don't currently have but should be mentioned are mesquite, long leaf pine, post oak, cotton wood and cypress. All four are beautiful but are somewhat problematic. Mesquite is haaaard but also prone to bugs. Long leaf pine is rare...reclaim or leave it in the forest. Post oak turns into spaghetti when dried. Cypress is beautiful but is also getting rare. Cotton wood (Los Alamos) are also getting rare, and should be left in the creek bottoms.
